They both have their own times when they are right. Its nice to come home after a ****ty day of work meet up with the room mate and cook one. But beer, well its BEER... need I say more. ****, you have a couple pints of Guinness and now you have had dinner and drinks.
Another factor is the beer that one would be drinking and the weed one would be smoking. If I come home and there was a party at my house the weekend before and some chump left Coors Light and that was all that was left than I am getting high. Alternately, if the weed isn't from BC and I have Granville Island Honey Lager in my fridge than beers it is.
This discussion depends on many things. We can even break it down as far as how the weed is being smoked. There are times when there is some crazy water bong going around its not too often that I can hit those. They actually get me too high, to the point were it just isn't fun and I am so retarded I become anti-social.
Obviously the social setting is a huge factor. There are lots of people in my province that smoke pot and many that don't. If I am out partying with my boss and some of his friends after work, I am drinking beers. If I am visiting friends back at my hometown I can usually be found rolling a couple up, hot boxing a car, or just having a giant session and playing Rock Band or something. If I am at the Amsterdam Cafe, well that is self explanatory. There are some people I just don't feel comfortable smoking weed around for various different reasons.
Time of day is another consideration. If I look at the clock and it is near 4:20 than as far as I am concerned the decision has already been made for me. If it is past 1:30 - 2:00 in the morning I am most likely going to smoke a joint also. If I smoke a couple joints earlier in the night I am most likely going to burn out early and crash and thats usually not too fun.
To boggle your mind further, consider what you plan to be doing after said beers or weed. If I am planning to drive I am not going to start drinking beers, and if I am doing something that involves lots of concentration (other than a video game) I am not going to get high.
One thing to consider as well is that in this land of great freedom we have many choices available and I say, why not both?
