All of the door stays on my 98 Q are really in bad shape do not hold the doors open when the car is in my angled driveway.

They come out of the doors fairly easily -- two nuts and one bolt after carefully popping off the door panel. Is there a way to rebuild them or add some support to the internal tension piece so I can keep the doors from hitting my wife in the leg??

These ran $35-40 each from the dealer the last time I checked, but they may have gone up considerably.

If anyone has a good fix, let me know. :D

I doubt this will help but worth a try: zerothread?id=101876

If that does'nt help then you may have to bite the bullet and buy the $35 things.

Hi Paul:

My post should have read Weak Door Stays versus Sagging. My bad.

Thanks for the sugestion, but that thread deals with the door striker/catch. I was referring to the part that keeps your door from opening all the way and contacting the fender. I did some more online research and found brand new OEM door stays (check) for $25.68 each. At this point, unless I find a low mileage parts car with all four doors still on it, I will have to bite the bullet and order these since I plan on keeping the car as long as possible.

Will keep you updated once I decide what to do. Not quite sure why these wear out unless the PO and her family opened and closed the doors about 10,000 times and wore them out. I looked at Q's with more miles on them then mine and the doors opened and stayed oped like new.

Maybe a moderator will accomodate you?

It is a design flaw of the FGY33. Finding a fix would make you very popular!

Fixed the title.

What I would try is getting out your dremel tool with the grinder and just making the little notches that hold the door open a little deeper... I doubt in 11 years the stays are worn out enough that getting new OEM ones are going to make a difference...

you should be able to do that in about 15 mins on the car..

I thought they had retention dimples. In any case, if they can be removed, they can be modified.
