Way to tell if a KA is from an S14 obd2?

Information on the naturally-aspirated KA24E and KA24DE engines.

the car i bought a few months ago is supposed to have a ka24de from a obd2 S14 which was converted to obd1. my s13 originally had a ka24e motor. is there something i can look for on the obd2 S14 ka24de motor so i can distinguish it from an S13 ka24de motor? thanx

Yes, you can distinguish between the two. The first thing you have to know is that OBD II is a diagnostic port located on the ECU. The ECU is located behind the passenger side kick panel. If it has a computer looking port on it, it is OBD II. Which means the ECU has been upgraded, or is from a S14. Second, look at the engine. The S13 engine will say 2400 12 VALVE on the valve cover. The S14 will say NISSAN TWIN CAM on the valve cover. I hope this helps.

My S13 hatchback is using an S13 DOHC ECU. The stock KA24E engine was swapped for a KA24DE. The person who swapped it said the engine is supposidly from an obd2 S14. I just want to know if the KA24DE that is installed in my car is really from an obd2 S14 or if it was from a 91-94 S13.

its quite possible that most of the S13 things were left in for simplicity. chances are they just used the S14 head and block.

the easiest way to check and see if they really switched the entire car to S14 OBD2 is if it has an S14 MAF

S14 MAFs are just a shade larger and a little different looking from S13 MAFs, however you cant run an S14 motor with S14 ecu without that

or you could look up the number on your ecu with the ecu look up faq... however i forgot where exactly that was, so try to compare MAFs

i'm just guessing its an S14 head and block and S13 everything else

you could see if it has an S13 intake manifold pretty easily too, just look for the swirl control valve, but that wont necessarily mean anything, as swapping manifolds is damn easy

It's too simple...

The S13 valve cover has 3 bolts on top in the center...

S14 KA motors have only 2 on top.

100% reliable and correct way to figure this out.

blah, yeah thats the painfully obvious way to tell the difference between an S14 and an S13 head, which we all overlooked

but in this case to know if its been converted to S14 OBD2 status, thats an entirely different situation you have to look for

That's easy too...look at the ECU plug.

S13 is diffferent that S14...there are diagrams out there.

And to use an S14 ECU, you'd have to cut/splice the MAF..and most likely the dist, unless you used a S14 dizzy...which would also be obvious.

One pic of the engine bay and we'd be able to tell all.
