I would put a coat of good quality wax on the versa pretty early on. I recommend doing the Meguiar's 3 Step System (paint cleaner, polish, carnuba wax) as it yields fantastic results and will ensure that you have a good base to maintain

Shouldn't need to clay bar a new car but you never know. Also, why wash after clay? You should use a deep paint cleaner after clay.

I plan on washing Max for the first time tomorrow, and had some questions about how to avoid water spots. I don't think I'll need to wax yet, he's still got a coat of wax on him from the dealer. As you Seattlites know, the water around here is very hard. What's the best way to avoid your car looking like it's sporting a leopard print after you wash?

I try to avoid washing at the hottest time of day. I also keep the entire car wet through the wash process so you don't have areas drying while you are still washing other parts. After it's washed, I use a California Waterblade and a microfiber towel to dry. It works great.

As far as waxing goes, I've been using (for the last 3 years) Meguiar's NXT Tech Wax liquid. It goes on easy, buffs off easy, leaves a great protective shine, and it even smells good!

Don't be afraid to wax a "new" car. You will hear some people tell you not to because the paint needs to "cure". That is true, but that process only takes a few weeks at the very most. By the time these cars are painted at the factory, shipped in to dealers, sit on the lot and then purchased, it's usually been well over a few weeks. Just check your door badge for date of manufacture. Wax away...no worries.

I have had my V since the end of February and have yet to wax it on account of not knowing the best waxing guidelines. Different people tell you different things about how and when you should wax and what you should use. I think I will go with the Meguiars 3 step like you said. Hopefully not doing it so far won't prove detrimental to my car...

You should wax when water fails to bead up or when the beads it forms are larger than a quarter. There's a lot of difference in opinion about what brand of wax you should use. It really depends on what your priorities are. In general, the super bright and shiny finish waxes need to be reapplied often to keep up that shiny appearance. Usually once a month or so.

Personally, I hate doing it that often so I use Nu Finish paste. It's advertised to last one year, but I do it about every six months or so. Not as bright as some of the stuff out there, but it lasts a lot longer. Plus I like the fact that you can apply it in direct sunlight, since it's a synthetic polymer and not a true wax. Waxes with carnauba in them tend to turn into a goopy mess unless the car is cool. Cars with dark paint tend to soak up heat very quickly.

One thing I forgot to add, though...

Though I've used Nu Finish for my other cars, I'll probably change to something else for Max, since you're not supposed to get Nu Finish on rubber and the V has those weatherstripping pieces in the rain gutters.

I have been using the Turtle Wax brand Ice car wash ever since I got my Versa and it was great, so today I went and got the Ice liquid polish and spray detailer. My car was already extremely shiny, but I was still able to achieve that nice mirror finish; all while in direct sunlight. It certainly was nice not having to worry about the white runny residue that comes with using pastes. Since I have used the car wash a ton, I can strongly recommend it. As for the wax/polish, so far so good.

I would take it easy on Nu Finish. It has cutting compound blended in the 1 step formula. While it will take some swirl marks out, it will remove some clearcoat at the same time.

Personally, I had great experience with 3M's system including Swirl Mark Remover, Imperial Hand Glaze and Perfect-it Wax. They have good products but don't do any marketing.

Wait, WHAT?

No, no, no, no... If you want hard water, cross the mountains. THAT is hard water. Ours isn't even close.

But to answer your question, I have two different methods. The intensive one, and the fun one. The intensive one is to dry it using chamois cloths after washing. The fun one is to take it for a... ahem.. spirited drive after washing it. AIR DRY!

I recommend waxing your car with Turtle Wax Ice paste. I bought the liquid claybar and was not impressed, I would say spend on some Meguiars claybar, but go for the Turtle Wax Ice paste the stuff goes on easy and does not leave that chalky residue over the plastic or rubber.

I have a black versa so its very shinny when you buff it and i can see my self... i use ICE liquid wax... i use to use the paste but it takes a long time to apply... so i used the liquid its faster and you can apply it to anything except the mirrors... i use rainx for mirrors... i was using the clay bar but yeah i dunno how to use that thing because it drys off too quickly when washing your car... ever since i got here to chicago ive been using the car wash and been waxing my card every week :P so the color wont fade because the car wash use hot water :P...

The ICE wax from turtle wax is good for quick waxing, but I would have to say I am a tried and true Zaino Bros. user through and through. That stuff is awesome, albeit a little pricy, but I think my car is worth the money.
