Well, I was taking my 240 down a local twisty road at about 11 pm this evening and I hear a belt break, so I stop my car. Well as I get out, I see that there is antifreeze spraying all over so I quickly turn off my ignition and pop the hood. I can clearly see that the waterpump/alternator belt has snapped and the pully connecting to the water pump is loose. Either the waterpump seized and then broke the belt, or the belt broke and then the pump seized causing the coolany leak. Well, my question to you guys is, I know I obviously need a new water pump, but how hard is the install? Right now the car is sitting about a mile and a half from my house, and I don't want to tow it somewhere to have them do it if I don't have to. I'd like any help and pointers you can give me as to complete this install smoothly. Thanx

well is the coolant coming from the pump for one. you wanna make sure the radiator didnt take a hit from the belt comin loose. the water pump on a 240 is fairly easy to replace. check your other 2 belts for possible damage too. when you replace the pump all you realy need to remove is the fan shroud and blade. the hoses going across the top of the shroud can be simply lifted and placed behind the engine lift hook with out disconnecting the ends of the hoses. the intake tube will need to be disconnected at one end and placed out of the way 2. other then that it is straight forward replacement

Yeah, it was the pump that was damaged, and that's what caused the coolant leak. The install was very easy, and none of the other two belts, nor the radiator was damaged. Mods, you can delete this thread, it's no longer use to anyone.

Water pump install is very easy. (This is assuming you've drained your radiator and caught all the coolant) Remove the radiator shroud for more space, take off the fan and fan clutch. Next loosen the belts that are in front of the water pump belt. Take off the pulley from the water pump (I believe 10mm nuts) then go around the water pump and remove those bolts. Now get that water pump off, I used the back of a hammer to make it really easy to pop off. Now grab your new pump and put silicone sealant around the back (where it mates the engine cover) and put the pump in place. Go backwards from the directions above. Take care to make sure your coolant system doesn't have air or just minimal amounts when you're going to burp your radiator.
