So I'm replacing the motor in my 2002 Pathfinder due to low compression on the number 2 cylinder. I have a low mile (65,000 miles) replacement motor on my engine stand and decided to replace a few things while it is easy to get to everything. Anyway, I was installing a new water pump and failed to put the motor at TDC while I removed the tensioner. While I was putting in the water pump the chain went tight and and it made a 'pop' sound. I think one of the cam banks may have moved and jumped a tooth. I can try jumping a tooth back, but have no idea which way the cams are facing at TDC with the timing chain cover on. I can remove the cam phaser covers and take a look, but what can I look for to see if the cams are correct? Anyway to fix this without removing the timing cover??? Thanks for any help!

I did find a template from Jim Wolf Technology, but the template doesn't match what I see under the cam phaser covers. And the template looks a bit different, maybe for a different vq35de motor?

You're going to have to check either the primary or secondary chains, which means removing the cover. The secondary chains have colored links, which will line up with notches on the rear timing cover or block. The primary chain may or may not have a colored link which will line up with a notch near the crankshaft.

I wonder if there is anything like this for the pathfinder? This template seems different, I think it's for a different vq35de motor.
