‎'Amazing' water trick goes viral---
Man suspends water without a cup, but is it real?
This isn't physically possible, correct?? :squint:
it's not physically possible.

Cool!

I think its highly possible, and real.

Not physically possible in the presence of gravity. Not physically possible in a universe were centrifugal force exists, either.

bs.

Doesn't bode with the properties of water either.

Notice he never touches the water either when it goes splash...his finger is a good inche above the "water"

someone just has too much free time with cgi effects

I think the con he's trying to pull is that if you spin the water fast enough, the gyroscopic motion will overcome the force of gravity and make it "hover". The finger wasn't there for the purpose of breaking the spell or whatever, it was to show that there was no container over the water. The water, when its spin-speed reduced enough, fell on its own and his finger just happened to be there at the time.

Yeah, there is neither a force acting on the water to keep it from crashing downward to the table nor a force preventing the momentum of the water from spraying outward from the cone. This would not work.

please don't open up that debate again, adam. i tried to follow along, amidst all the childish bickering, but it was too much. just recalling that thread makes my head hurt.

not possible. The vacuum from the small airbubble on top would kill it, the faster it spins the more it wants to throw itself out (centrifugal F), definantly wouldnt hold itself for that long if it were to stay like that.

cool tho. Its a mess maker for the believers

Sorry. Pet peeve of mine. I don't like when people argue stuff exists when it clearly doesn't. Same as I don't like meaningless words (irregardless). I'm not sure what was so confusing about that thread. I'm reading it over now. You've got a few people proving centrifugal force doesn't exist and on the other side a couple of people asking for proof that it doesn't exist (even though it's been given 100 times). Seems pretty straightforward to me. Sadly, that is covered in high school physics...

In this case, there is no centripetal force acting on the water to contain it from moving outward from the center of the column.

Oh, go suck on a stalagmite, mister physics-britches.

Why do they call it a centrifuge instead of a centripurge then?

Ok. I'll go eat some paninis instead.

Edit: Chad, I'm not sure. Why is a car called a car? Someone just made up a word. And for what it's worth, it's far more complex than I've made it sound. It all depends on your frame of reference. If that happens to be a non-inertial reference frame, a FBD would exhibit a "centrifugal" force. But again, this is making it far more complex than anyone would want to get into. In the way we like to view the world, centrifugal force does not exist. Put it this way: let's say you are driving your car down the highway and you mash the accelerator. The cars around you appear to slow down as though a force was acting on them causing them to decelerate. This *force* that caused those cars to slow down is very real in that reference frame, but it is still fictitious. Better?

The alternative name car is believed to originate from the Latin word carrus or carrum ("wheeled vehicle"), or the Middle English word carre ("cart") (from Old North French), or from the Gaulish word karros (a Gallic Chariot).

Actually, if I'm clean-shaven I look just like John Galecki from that show. Seriously, I do.

Too many people posted, but see my car accelerating on the highway example in my previous post. Probably the best way I can explain it...
