Has anyone with an M37 ever had to change the water pump. is it labor intensive? does it require removing the oil pan?

I would check the FSM to get an idea of what the procedure entails, it should be shown there.

To my knowledge there's no "sneak" way to R&R the pump without removing the front timing cover like there is with a transverse VQ. The lower pan has to come off because there are two vertical screws underneath it retaining the bottom of the chain cover. The upper pan stays in place. If the engine has some miles, you might want to do the chains, guides, and tensioners while you have it apart.

It's being worked on as I'm typing message, the timing oer definitely had to be removed, so did the pan.
Thought it was m35 engine where there is a cover for the pump and Tensioner.
