water pump squeal 1990 m30

i replaced my alternator and now my water pump squeals. if i loosen the belt the squeal stops but the alternator stops charging. after driving a short distance the squeal stops but starts again if i turn the engine off and back on. no antifreeze leak from the pump. is the pump bad or is something else afoot? thanks for any suggestions.

Are you sure the squeal is coming from the WP? I would think it's more likely to be the idler pully on that belt, but at about 20 years old - I guess anything is possible.

You might want to get a mechanic's stheoscope like this one to be sure about the source of your noise... http://www.harborfreight.com/c...41966
