This is another project that I'm getting ready to tackle. I'm flushing the coolant system, replacing belt, hoses, and thermostat; so I may as well replace the pump. Is the replacement job as simple as the Service Manual depicts?

if you are not going to use an OEM thermostat, id leave the thermostat alone, until it needs replacing. i replaced my maxima thermostat once and it wasnt an oem one. it was an autozone brand. the car started acting funny almost immediately. the thermostat opened up to quickly, and everything cycled too often. the fans ran almost constantly. total pain in the butt. i popped in the old one again, and everything was back to normal. car ran for 160k trouble free.

if you replace your engine coolant every 60k, you wont need a new thermostat nor pump (theoretically), because you wont allow your engine coolant to become acidic enough to start breaking down the metals, causing rust, thus clogging up the radiator, lines, and eating away the metal fins in the pump.

Great reply, ImS; thanks. I'll follow your advice. Do you add any type of 'conditioner' to your coolant?

never. those things are snake oils.

a. those with strange chemical properties: you never know how long they last, and what happens to them after X amount of time. they could turn into tar, and end up clogging up radiator lines.
b. those made out of regular engine coolant: those things are nothing more than regular engine coolant, with a tiny bit more lubricant - in a tiny bottle, leading you to believe its somehow going to improve the life/service of your existent coolant.
c. some are just pure coolant, which in effect will simply throw your 50/50 balance off into 51%/49% which will create better cold temp performance, and add more of the lubricant properties in the coolant itself to your mix. but you can do this yourself, by adding half a cup more of coolant than water.
