hey guys, i've been reading up alot before i decided to do my swap, and finally decided on an rb20. my question is, why is it "necessary" to put new water pumps and oil pumps on the engines? if the engines have "30-40k" on them (i think those numbers are quite optimistic), is it really mandatory to change those parts. i guess the reason i'm asking is that the parts combined are an extra $500-600 i didnt want to spend if i didnt have to... but i will if it really is necessary. i dont plan un pushing much more power than stock... just 240-250ish to the wheels. any input would be helpful!

btw- i did search around and i mostly found SR related questions like this...

dont do a RB swap on a tight budget. you will not be happy with the outcome.

Its for peace of mind and convenience..If you put the engine and everything in the car then two months later your water pump fails, your gona have to take off all the belts and everthing including timing belt and main pulley just to get to the water pump. Which you would be thinking "damn this woulda been easier when i just had the engine out."

I changed the water pump on my old RB and it took me and my friend 5 hours because we had never done it before..Out of the car, never doing it before, I'm confident it wouldn't take more than an hour and a half.

Usually the engine has been sitting in a junkyard for months or years, often with little amount of coolant in the system. That causes rust, especially on things like th thermostat and water pump. I replaced mine and the original was actually in great shape, but I have seen other people have not been so lucky.

Kamin is right, don't try to do an RB swap on the cheap because the things you don't do in the beginning will bite you in the butt later.

Yea I didn't expect to spend over 9g on my RB20. *shrugs* Oh well.... Custom made parts and replacement parts suck but at the same time worth it.

waterpump should be replaced at a minimum as its a pita to do in the car...oil pump only if you are planning on also pulling the crank out and collaring the crank.
