Well....after some extensive traveling and driving another car that I bought to try out a stick (never have owned a stick shift) around for the last 2 months....the Q is back as the official daily driver with many thanks to Wes's help with me replacing my water pump and the poor Q sat for 4 weeks untouched because of a leaky water pump and me being out of town. Total replacement took about 45 minutes from beginning to end and was very simple thanks to a pre-phone call consultation with Wes. Here are two pics of the housing of my water pump that I snapped off with my camera cell phone. I think I was very luck in that I did not drive the car any further until I replaced the water pump as there appears to be some sort of grinding scar on the surface of the housing and I am curious as to what it exactly is from. The water pump was not leaking bad...but it had just started to leak and I stopped driving it instantly.

Welcome back Rob.

I'm sure Wes was glad to help, but would have rather been there helping and enjoying the warm S. Fla winter.

Have you gotten any cool weather 1/4 times, or is that still even in the plan?

I was hoping for some new 1/4 ET's tonight especially since it is freezing down here in Miami with low 40's and dry. I have a condo board meeting that I must attend tonight so I am hoping for this Friday night some new ET's as it is every Wednesday & Friday they run the lanes. The car feels much stronger as I am spinning tires like a mad man and getting some really nasty wheel hop vibrations that I need to let off the gas before she shakes apart. Not sure if all the tire spinning is due to the cooler pavement or not, but it must be a factor.

pito...I drove a Mustang for about 5 weeks. I picked it up off a friend of a friend who was in a jam and needed to get out of it that day. I got such a good deal on it I was able to turn it in to CarMax the day before Thanksgiving for $100 difference from what I paid for it (also out the sales tax and insurance monies). I picked up the car because I have never owned a stick and wanted to try driving a stick on an every day basis to see how I would like it as getting a stick or not is a big part of my next car buying decision. The stick was fun when I did not have a cell phone call or fast food.

Welcome back Rob!

I'll venture a guess here. The only experience I've had with a water pump housing being damaged is when the bearing inside goes bad, the impeller can "walk" out of line and score the housing (or worse, the block)...

Not sure if that's the kind of damage you're seeing, pics are a bit small and fuzzy, but that's a start.

Good luck at the track - make sure to drop your pressure in the rears and maybe even throw some weight in the trunk so it'll hook up.

that is what I am thinking that a bearing went bad and then during some of my high speed runs it somehow scored the surface of the housing. I think I have had this slight leak for a while as whenever I made my "temporary drag strip" on the interstate going about 130mph+ I would get a very fine mist hitting the windshield but could not tell what it was and I never had a coolant leak of any sort until I saw a very small little puddle under my car about 4 weeks ago and since then it has not been driven. I got lucky with the pump not freezing up doing more damage.

Yep.

You don't want to see what happens when you shear off the shaft right at the housing.

Did this in my GranSport at 100mph, the pulley/fan/clutch assembly went through every belt, hose and wire, destroyed the shroud and radiator, cut the high-pressure P/S line, cracked the alternator housing, nicked the A/C compressor, doused the entire car in hot coolant and punched a hole in the hood.

Rob, good to see ya back in the forum. I'm glad to see you and the Q are fine. As far as the whole stick/auto car choice, get the stick. All that highway driving in Miami, a stick is a very good idea. I miss my stick shift car. I ramble on. Hey, Merry X-mas Rob.
