water pump help

1990 infiinit m30 replaced alternator and now water pump squeals. if i loosen the belt the squeal stops but the battery light comes on. after driving a short time the squeal stops but starts again if i turn the car off and back on. is the water pump shot or is something else at play. there is no leaking of antifreeze. thanks

Is the belt Glazed ?Sounds like a worn belt.

thank you for the response. i decided to re-tighten the alternator and ask my son for help torquing the unit. i was having problems holding it taunt and tightening the bolt by myself. turns out, i was not getting the belt tight enough. no more squeal. belt doesn't appear to be glazed and is not cracked but that is a good thing to know for the future.thanks.

Most people are surprised with just how tight the belts need to be !!Glad you are sorted out !!
