What is the common failure mode for the water pump? Does it have a weep hole? Would it allow a steady drip when it fails?

A few weeks ago, I noticed coolant dripping from the front passenger-side corner of the engine. It was an infrequent drip, but for the last few months I had been noticing that the coolant overflow tank was empty, so I kept filling it. The radiator always was full.

Today, I noticed a pretty steady drip. The radiator was low, I had to add about 1.5 liters to fill it up, and I also added 500 ml to the overflow tank as it was empty.

Looking from below, the coolant is just dripping off the front corner of the oil pan, right behind the AC compressor. Can't see further up to see where the drip originates.

Took at look at the service manual, and up above the compressor and the alternator are three things are part of the cooling system: water pump, thermostat, and two bypass hose connections.

Thanks!

Searching, I found this thread:

From the post by Moderator loystock, looks like I definitely have a leak from the water pump weep hole.

OK, so now I need to research the job...

yes there is a lot of good info
I would try to loosen the motor mounts to get more room to work
but others have worked in the tight area you have
If your timing chain is loose or chain tensioners are worn, it would be a good time
to replace
This work will probably require an engine puller though

Is there a way to measure the timing chain stretch?

I'm planning to replace the tensioner, is there more than one? I only saw one in the water pump section of the factory service manual.

This can be a tough job even for experienced mechanics
If not done right you can ruin your engine
you have a timing chain tensioner and two camshaft tensioners
There are also some chain guides
Not sure if the crank and cam sprockets are good or not as the
teeth on them can get worn
If you start your car up in the morning and it "rattles" from that
area, and then as it warms up the noise goes away, you probably have a worn timing chain tensioner. I had that
issue in my 95 and 98 and replaced them both through the "hatch"
on the timing chain cover. Working through the hatch was not too
hard but you do have to pay attention to what you are doing
