How much of a risk is it to have a cold air intake like k+n that extends down to the wheel well? It seems that pop chargers with z tubes really would not benefit from cold air with them being on top of the engine compartment. Does the extended tube cause increase flow i.e. hp being in the cold air and how much of a danger is there in sucking in water?

These go around the cone and stop water from going in.

Thanks for the bump on the covers but what about z tube vs. cold air?

A short ram intake is better than a cold air intake. Consider the following analogy: Which method of sucking a drink up will be easier; a large short straw that is close to the soda, or a long skinny straw that is further away? The engine sees the same.

Just so long as your air intake is above water you should be fine - a friend had a cold air intake on an ex cop car Caprice that went straight down in front of the engine and sucked air in from under the front bumper. The car ran much better until they had a big rain storm - he lives in Vegas so that dosent happen all that often... so he's driving along and hits a huge puddle and sucked in a bunch of water and effectively "shortened his piston rods" locked the motor up and had to rebuild - cracked crank, bent rods, broken rings, punch the cylinders .040 over due to the scratches from the rings... needless to say never drive through a puddle with a cold air intake unless you know for sure that it will remain above the water line and you won't splash too much water into it.
