Interesting read here about motor oils on the shelves that can actually damage your engine:

The two oils caught here are just the tip of the iceberg. Motor oils with obsolete specifications that can damage modern engines are found in every city in every state. Some can be identified because they mention they meet API SA, but these oils have NO additives and are not suitable for any engines build after 1930! Even more dangerous are those oils that do not claim to meet any API or ILSAC specification, as this lack of information is easy to miss and they are most likely substandard.
Don't buy based on price alone - oil is not oil! Read your owners manual, note the specification requirements, such as API SM or ILSAC GF-4, and buy only oils that are certified under these specifications. Look for the Starburst symbol on the front label or the Donut symbol on the back label. This is noted in your manual.

There are a lot of oil scams out there - educate yourself and don't be a victim!
