Is it possible to swap a stock internal wastegate on a stock turbo set-up for an external wastegate? And if so,what is the process of making this modification?Thanx.......

Its possible but you'll need to some fabrication done to the exhaust manifold. Not much point to it really though.

theres no point unless your pushing more boost than the internal wastegate can handle, which I doubt that will happen since most turbos that come with them arent exactly "heavy hitters". If you wish to do it anyway, you have to pull the vacuum hose that goes to the internal wastegate and then weld a flange on the exhaust manifold. I've seen people attach a flange to the turbine housing after ripping off the internal gate and cutting the hole larger, waste of money though.

To be more specific,I got my hands on a garrett T3 out of a Z31 300zx.At 1st I got it to just take it apart and learn more about the working parts. Now I'm in the process of polishing it up,porting here and milling there, then poof I think I might be on to something.I want to make something like a sleeper snail and I know it can be done.I just need to do something about the wastegate so it can handle more boost.

I read in another thread how you could change out the spring or something of that nature to help wastegate duties.Could anyone please explain the spring that was spoken of in the other thread?Thanx

all wastegates are controlled by springs, whether internal or external. You'd change the spring thats located in the actuator, which is the funny looking cylinder shaped thing with the rod coming out of it. The spring in there can be changed to a titer one to handle more boost, but thats pointless, you might as well just get a boost controller to do that.

Thanx Steph for your input.BUT,let me ask you this,if the factory wastegate setting is at 14psi max how can I surpass this setting so I can get more boost outta of the snail?

1 more thing

Not to get off topic or anything.I've also read in other post about the cmpression ratios of specific model years of 240sx and I'm just looking for the facts.

According to my Chilton's manual:'95 is at 10.5:1'96 is at 10.5'97-'98 is at 9.5:1

Please correct me if I'm wrong so that I might scribble a note in my manual. And also please direct me to your source so that I can check that out myself.Thanx

if the factory wastegate is at 14lbs, then that means that when the pressure in the intake manifold is more than 14psi (thats 28.7 absolute) it will start opening the wastegate. The wastegate spring gets pressure bled to it through a vaccuum hose attached to the intake manifold, thats how it knows when the pressure reaches that. so if you want to surpass 14lbs, pull the vaccuum hose or get a boost controller to bleed off pressure.

I'd becareful just pulling the vacuum hose off, the wastegate won't open. Which will result in engine damage or turbine overspeed.

Just get a boost controller and by a nice aftermarket wastegate actuator. You should be fine. A T3 isn't going to support much more the 14psi anyway. Especially a used one from a Z.

I was just answering the question, it IS a way to do it. A bleeder T would also do it, more reliably too, but they cost 15 cents. :)

Thanx WD for your input, but I want people to think exactly what you're thinking whenever I pop the hood.Especially with a used one from a Z.There's method in my madness.

So what yall are saying is that all I gotta do is set the boost on the boost controller to whatever setting I see fit even if it exceeds the max setting of the wastegate and that's that?

yep, just make sure you dont set it too high, I honestly wouldnt recommend you set it higher than the 14lbs, or even that high. I'm not too knowledgeable regarding KA-T and what they can handle, but 14 seems kinda high for a stock motor.

I wasn't so much correcting you Stephen, just wanted to make sure Tony didn't unass his head gasket.

If you have fuel and ignition set up for boost you should be able to run 14lbs all day. But much more then that and it'll be worth it to rebuild the bottom end and go for broke. Careful...boost is addictive. I've been through 5 RB20DET's in just 3 years.

LMAO...lets just say I get RB's alot cheaper then you guys can. In fact, I'll be bringing a few home with me when I get back next Dec. I'm in the USAF by the way. The flight pay does help though...

You should see my garage/laundry room. My wife used to get so pissed when I'd bring a new engine home. Now she just cleans up oil spills and buys all kinds of Victoria Secrets crap to get even. I hate those pricks for having a credit card.

No idea what a set of Nismo rims is going for. Probably expensive, everything else is over here.

Navy SEALs huh...good luck to ya. That is some hard training...Being in Spec OPs for the last 10 years has allowed me to work with Delta and the SEALs a few times. That have my ultimate respect. I've dropped them off in places I didn't even want to fly into.

we all make mistakes, if you'd like to regain your manhood, start driving a nissan as a daily driver and run that car off a cliff (are there cliffs there? lol)... and sign up for paratroopers. (I'm not a USAF man, so i dont know if i spelled that right).

Paratroopers are Army. I'll stick with my helicopters thx. Remember...when you guys are humping all over creation I'll be in the Hotel having drinks with loose women.

All the Nissans over here that are worth driving come with turbo's. It is impossible for me to have a car like that and save money.

Besides, I'm pretty much past that phase in my life where i really have to care about what others think about my car. When I get back to the states my 240 will probably be one of the quickest in the country...street legal that is.

they are? damn man, i could have swore they were air force, thats what MEPS told me, lol. Army already has Rangers, then Green Berets, then Delta Force. I know theres a special ranger team that has a similar name to the USAF SF, but I didn't think it was Para trooper. What's USAF SF then?

We have STS and Pararescue. I work with the PJ's(pararescue) everyday. There basically the combat medics.

The USAF elite aren't much in comparison with Delta and the SEALs. STS are some bad mofo's don't get me wrong. I'm just glad we're all on the same team.

Paratroopers are Rangers. They are in the Airborne division. They are the same division that jumped in behind the enemy lines in WWII. If you watch Band of Brothers, that's the division, and they are ARMY.
