every turbo needs a wastegate. It will either be internal (part of the turbo) or external (mounted to the turbo manifold). A blowoff valve is not necessary but it is recommended. What it does is release unused psi so when it comes back, it wont make the turbo propellar go backwards. also, BOV sound great. have fun choosing for sounds!

i would not have a turbo charged car without a bov unless you plan on replacing turbos very often (hks ssqv is very loud ).. the bov relases the excess pressure in your intake track after the throttle plate is closed and keeps the turbo from trying to backspin ..as for a wastegate this is required to regulate boost from the turbo .. most wastegaes are internal but some people run external gates that vent the unused exaust gases right out before they go through the cat ( if u have one ) or the muffler.. external gates usually allow you to build boost sooner and hold it more steadaly .. equals very loud car once youve reached the boost level that the gate opens at ..

actually variable vane turbos do not use wastegates, although its an oem application only so far, i think. it's not something to mess with though until it becomes available to the aftermarket

ACTUALLY SOME COMPANIES LIKE PORCHE HAVE STARTED USING WASTE GATES WITH THE VARIABLE TURBOS BECAUSE THEY WERE EXPERIANCING OVERBOOST PROBLEMS WITH THE EARLY MODELS ..

thats news to me. i'm not trying to prove anything here, just kinda adding in some new tech info. most of my info on this comes from benz though and they have no issues with the variable vane turbos, but i guess they just built it better, but then again i'm biased
