I accidently posted this in the fwd section...

When I bought my car the previous owner who built the car put a nissan t28 on the s13 redtop. The dump pipe that travels from the turbine housing to downpipe was cut off to vent to air. My questions are1) does any other sane person do this2) does it hinder my boost I boost around 12-16 psi by 4000 RPM is that ok?3) It seems to let exhaust past the wastegate at idle and when im driving around(sounds like bad exhaust leak) Is that normal... as a note I had a tial 38 on another car of mine and the only time it let out exhaust was at full boost. Is this normal for stock internally wastegated turbos or is my wastegate turbo leaky??

I would greatly appreciate some knowledgeable input on this one.

Venting your wastegate gasses to atmo is pretty dumb IMO. The idea is to gain better spool, but honestly, you're netting peak boost maybe a 100 rpm earlier. It's not much. Now, the damage that can be done from having exhaust gasses dumped like that are pretty high. The steering rack and column shaft are the two things that would suffer the most possible damage.

I'm not too certain on the leaking issue. The flapper really should be flushly shut, but internal wastegates aren't perfect. I would consider pulling the O2 pipe off and inspecting the flapper for damage to the sealing surface

IMO a external waste gate dumped in the air is a bad *** sound and a great set up. but for internal its not a good idea, unless theres a spacer from the flapper to the DP. im running 2 tial 38mm open dump tube.

If my wastegate or flapper is damaged can you buy a replacment one, Is the hks adjustable internal wastegate the only option?

The HKS adjustable gate is just the actuator, not the flapper part.

Icouln't follow your post, what do you have?

Are there new flappers that are available as a rebuild or should I just replace my turbo with the gt2871r that comes with a wastegate and call it a day?
