I've finally been swayed to go with an external wastegate and have come up with two options for where to put it. The first would be to do it like I seen several people with stock manifold where they weld a flange to the top of the cast manifold. The second would be to drill the block-off plate I'm using in place of the internal gate and weld some pipe to that with a flange to bolt the external gate to. Which would be the better route, using the old internal port or making a new port and welding a flange onto it on the manifold. I noticed that most aftermarket manifolds come with a flange on them but, the only reason for this I could find was that the after market turbos that you would use with them don't have provisions for an external wastegate. Let me hear what you guys think.

more ideally have the wastegate on the manifold. if you are considering placing the wastegate on the turbine output flange, you must port the hole to match the correct size for the wastegate, otherwise you will experience boost-creeps or slow response with releasing the xhaust.

i suggest this method if you are sticking wiht the stock manifold. juse a circular drill bit and slow speed drill. or take it to a machine shop or someone with a plasma cutter.

That is by far the best one I've seen weld to the stock manifold. Thanks for the pic.

Who did your welding? it looks very nice. I had the same thing done to a datsun 280zxt manifold. Worked well.

What pipe did you have welded on there as well?

that's not my manifold, but i can tig weld it for you. the elbow is stainless steel schedule 40.

i made two version of adapters. one that sandwich between the manifold and the turbo and allow external wastegate to be mounted. the 2nd version i made converting your stock manifold to a top mount turbo setup.

picture of the 2nd version adapter i made, it was on my old setup; i sold the car several years ago. if you look carefully you can see the stock manifold. zer...2.jpg the only thing is with this setup, i didn't have power steering nor AC. so not sure if it will fit on your fully equiped setup.
