Here is the skinny on BOV's:If you are running a MAFS it is a good idea to run a recirc type BOV, like the Greddy Type 'S' or type 'R' depending on your boost levels. If you are running a MAP sensor you can run any style you like (atmospheric or recirc).Consider this: A blow off valve gets rid of air and pressure to protect the turbo from shock. A mass air flow sensor tells your ECU how much air is available for consumption, so that the computer can provide the appropriate amount of fuel. If you dump metered air into the atmosphere, the ECU still thinks that air is there and will provide the fuel for it. This tends to create an overly rich condition, eventually leading to fouled plugs and worst case scenario, a severely damaged engine due to fuel leaking by the piston rings and mixing with the oil, greatly reducing the viscosity of the oil.

The only way to run a atmospheric BOV is to upgrade to a stand alone EMS such as the APEXI Power FC that will allow you to convert to a MAP (manifold Air Pressure) sensor. These work like they sound, calculate the amount of air based on maniflod pressure, not air flow, so now you can run an atmosperic type BOV, suchas the Blitz SS.

Hope this helps you in your decision.

That's not the only way to run an atmospheric BOV. You can simply run a blow through MAF, and be just fine.

Please explain this. I have never heard of it. It may help with me with a future set up, plus it will explain the option to the original thread poster.

forge motorsport has some nice BOV's and DV's. The thing I like about forge's units is that you can purchase a spring package (about $15 for three different rate springs) and you can tune the DV to your particular setup. If you're running high boost, you can select a stiffer spring that won't leak when you hit high boost, or if you run low boost, you can select a softer spring that will release with the lower boost pressure.

Also these units are servicable, so if they break, you can fix them

Well, there is a thread on this forum discussing this atleast once a week. In fact, there were atleast two threads just this week.

Here are a few threads talking about it. Let me know if you don't find the info there.

Newbie here - just got my SR swap done (S13 redtop into S14). ziggy682 I saw your maf relocation pics.. quick question - what gauge wires did you use to extend the harness for the maf? Also did you have to get some kind of adapter to connect the maf to the ic piping?

thanxDanny

i have been running a atmophere dump style bov for 6 years on my sr20. no trouble yet! it doesn't stall on me, or anything.if you do have trouble, it will only be when you are in first and let off and imediatly ask the engine to idle. not many people know this, but above 2000rpm when you let of the gas completely the injectors are shut off, so no extra fuel is getting in.shaun

Actually, the wiring isn't extended at all. I just pulled all the electrical tape stuff off of the main harness, and rerouted the stock MAF wiring. I put some split loom on it to protect the wires, but I never even cut them.

I actually built a custom MAF adapter using 3" pipe and some 1/4" steel plate. The 3" pipe actually goes into the MAF and bottoms out because I didn't want to have any turbulence caused by the MAF adapter. I've had problems in the past with cheap MAF adapters distrupting the air flow and throwing off the MAF. You can see my MAF adapter in this pic, sorry it's just a pic of all the intercooler piping, so it's not the greatest.

Cool - thanks! Yea I've been reading up on atmospheric vs recirculating BOV's and decided I *have to* have the SWOOSH sound...and the louder the better haah. So yea definately gonna relocate the maf. Nice custom piping btw. I can't wait to get my custom 3" Magnaflow exhaust this weekend.. 3" cat, 3" resonator, 3" mandrel-bent intermediate, 3" magnaflow muffler...
