I love my Rogue, but I am still not happy about the road noise I hear, mainly coming from the rear. I'm assuming it's the spare tire wheel well as I've read that this area of the car is not insulated at all. I'd been doing some research on an affordable solution for this problem and I think I may go with this stuff:

It's similar to Dynamat, but more affordable. This particular product by Raamaudio is not a mat, but a closed cell foam. It's fire retardant, etc. So would probably work better than just buying some foam from Wal-Mart or something.

What do you guys think? It's less than $20 and peel and stick and Raamaudio has got great reviews on car audio forums.

Sounds good to me. No pun intended. You can also buy a can of underbody coating. I always seem to see it when I stop by the autobody store. One of the claims on the can is to dampen sound and the application of this stuff inside the wheel well. Sounds simple enough and maybe you could use this to compliment any other sound dampening modifications. :mike

Forgot to mention that people bought the cargo cover in the past to diminish noise from that area.

I'm planning on getting some spray-can truckbed liner from advance auto parts. I think it'll go on a little thicker and leave a better finish than the slightly cheaper "undercoating" (they're on the same shelf, right next to each other.

The dilema I have is do I put in under the car, or actually in the cabin - under the carpet and spare tire. I haven't looked under that trunk area yet... if there's a lot of exposed sheet metal I'll go the under car route. But if there are a lot of wires, transmission pieces, etc. I'm more inclined to try and apply from the inside.

Ensolite makes a pretty good product, actually they are just fabricators buying elastomeric rubber and skiving it and put on the peel off adhesive. Dynamat has a slightly better noise coefficient that will block noise better. The difference, is the Ensolite absorbs sound through the cell structure of the foam, whereas the Dynamat provides a barrier from the noise.

IMO, I think you would want both, especially in the trunk area. A sound absorbing foam to absorb noise generated and a sound barrier to trap the noise that doesn't get absorbed. As far as flame retardants, they will pretty much all have the FMVSS 302 certification. If you buy foam material that would normally be used in an occupied building, then that material would need to pass the ASTM E84 flame/smoke spread test which is much more stringent than the FMVSS 302. The FMVSS is a relatively easy test to pass and is most of the time conducted on materials, just for a liability measure.

Take the spare out and the surrounding panels, apply either of the two and then apply additional foam/rebonded material around the spare and I bet you will be very happy.

Hey, Globe9,

Did you ever settle on a type of insulation?
