Question... Q45 began development in 86... landed in 89 1/2 with variable valvle timing. All I remember, before I owned one of these fine vehicles, is hearing about hondas vtec "blah blah" yet I dnt remember hearing about it that earlier on. Can someone explain the history of vvt, was the q the first production engine to use it? If not, what was... 90 seems awfully early, certainly lexus/merc/bmw had no such system, and didn't introduce them untiul the mid to late 90s.. or am I totally incorrect... Also, I remember chrysler (eagle/dodge/etc) CONSTANTLY hyping their "sport shift auto trannies", yet the Q had an aswesome steptronic style shifter. This was mentioned and LOVED by the original reviewers, yet never mentioned in the adds or anything. VVT and a steptronic style shifter seem like nissan/infiniti innovations, they should have been hyped more... reviewers loved them, potential owners had no idea..

The steptronic style shifter was pioneered by MB.

As for the VVT, I remember there were some earlier ones, but they are all a bit obscure.I think its safe to say the VVT in Q45 was the first VVT in a luxury car?

LOL, find a ricer and you'll see a jerk who claims Honda was first with VVT in the 91 NSX.

While it never made it into a production car, VVT (in its basic, most rudimentary form) was created by Dr. Ferdinand Porsche in the 30s. And yes, the NSX had a VVT system in production models in 1990, while the Q had one in 1989.

Ricers... are SUCH jerks. I hope they continue driving like idiots and kill themselves.

I think the 5.0 liter in the 1990 MB SL500 [only not in sedan] had a form of intake VVT..........with the same 20 degrees of change!http://www.autosite.com/garage...a.asp

Porsche had a 3.0 liter F4 in 1992 with VVT in the 968.

Lexus added VVT in 1998.

I think the only reason VTEC became such a popular little acronym is because soo many aftermarket tuners could make serious horsepower gains from honda's valvetrain. MB, Infiniti, and even Porshe just don't have that kind of audience. Therefore, since VTEC became a hit first, all the plentiful ignorant think it was made first. And since they really are all jerks, an arguement goes nowhere fast. Just have to take a deep breath and hope they really do remove themselves from our gene pool....

The 3 liter 1990 300zx [later to become the J30 engine] had VVT in 1989 when it launched with Q45.

VTEC on a SOHC doesn't actually change the timing of the camshaft, but incorporates different lobes at a specified RPM. Thus, while the results are similar, the technology employed is fundamentally different.

The CRX SiR had VTEC in 89 in its B16 (in Japan...I don't know if we are talking strictly US though).

US spec GSR didn't get it until 92 on a B series dual cam, the D series EX/Si also in 92, also, didn't Porsche have it in like 86-87 on the 930 Turbo?

My first brand new car was a 94 Accord EX with the VTEC Engine. I don't know if it was the first production model with VVT but it was the first time I ever heard about that. To tell you the truth, I never found much of a diferance after 4000 rpm, when it kicks in, but it was still a zippy enough car for 145HP and a 5 speed.

My 94 Si had VTEC, and it was a distinct change at a certain RPM.

Jesda, I see where some people would confuse Honda having the first VTEC in the NSX with Honda having their first VTEC in the NSX. Some people might get confused.
