What is the easiest way to make a custom fiberglass like peice for speakers to sit in? What would you use to mold a fiberglass system from? I want to do a custom mold of fiberglass for speakers and was just curious how you would do that.

hey if you check out "my system thread", i explain a good part of the process of making a fibreglass enclosure...

but what you'll definately need is fibreglass resin, and catalyst to harden the resin. if you're making small enclosures like kick panels you can get away with using fibreglass cloth, which doesn't need very much resin, but for a larger enclosure like a sub, you'd want more rigidity and you'd probably wanna go with the matte which requires about 3 times more resin than the cloth.

check my thread for a big explanation on how to actually go about making the rings/supports and the other misc materials i used... but if you're going to want to make kicks where they would sit on the carpet, you need to lay down tinfoil in the area you want to make them and do a few layers of fibreglass over that foil then you can take it out and work on it... this will make a base for the rest of the enclosure to be built upon..

if you got any more questions, there's other guys on this board that would be glad to help you out

Hey that photo of the finished product for your door isnt showing up was wondering if you still had it laying around?

Alright I read it but I was curious what "stuff" you actually ended up using to make the custom enclosures for the speakers on the doors?

Like the frame for the speakers the actual fiberglass material used the resin yadda yadda. I would like to know what you did step by step some of the reading was vague but I would appreciate your help alot.

ok this is what i used... i dunno if you can get same stuff as i got but it gives you an idea:

1) Wood - 3/4" MDF (to make rings for speakers)

2) Spandex material - the stretchiest stuff you can find (really stretchy stuff to stretch around rings and make the shape of the enclosure)

3) Hot Glue (to glue together rings/supports, and gluing the spandex in place)

4) 6 oz fibreglass cloth (2 yards is plenty... cut in strips and overlap for strength)

5) 1L jug of FT-150 Fibreglass Resin

6) 50mL of Resin Catalyst (mixes with resin to allow resin to harden...)

7) Foam rollers and cheap paint brushes (to apply resin)

8) disposable masks and rubber gloves (for sanding and applying fibreglass/bondo)

9) 1 Gallon of Rage Gold Bondo and plastic spreaders (Rage is the best stuff to use)

10) 60 grit heavy duty sand paper and some 120 and 400 for finishing (3M stuff is pretty good)

11) Base Primer with scratch filler (4-5 layers is needed for decent prep surface, so buy as many as you'd need)

12) Automotive SprayPaint of your choice (I used Factory Nissan Charcoal, cause that's the same color as my car)

13) Clear coat (need a good 4+ layers to make it look decent... i did 6 and it's really nice and shiny)

14) Interior Automotive vinyl (buy at any fabric store... i got the cheapest stuff i could get)

15) ProBond contact cement (you can use spray too...again, 3M is pretty good)

16) Hair dryer to heat up vinyl for stretching

there! that's everything i used... i didn't list the tools but common sense would tell you which ones to use... i listed off all the materials i used in order of which they were used... i'd have to write a frickin book to explain how i did everything in detail, so just go with the flow.. i had never done any bodywork whatsoever before this project, it was ALL a learning experience... if i can do it, you can do it... but prolly not as good as me :pface

Hmm just the door panels themselves? Wow I dont know could you give me a price I can work on? Cause I dont want to say something ridiculously low and then you laugh at me in stupidity haha. But I would definitely consider buying them from you i mean "Definitely"

If its with the speakers I would liek that to :P whatever your willing to sell.

hehe... maybe! i'd be willing to part with the door panels for $200 CDN, so that i can afford to buy new ones... or $500 CDN with speakers...

but not quite yet, cause i am too lazy to make new enclosures for new speakers, plus i don't have the money for new speakers :pface
