Hey guys, I changed the brakes on my 2004 G35. They definitely needed to be changed, the warning light came on and the navigation told me too. Anyway, I got new rotors andpads, installed them, they work great, but the light will not go away. How do I get the light to go away.

I am not much of a mechanic, but it is not hard to do brakes. Do I need to take it to the dealership to have them clear the code?

Go to autozone and ask them to check what the code is--they will give you a print out or you can write down the code the car is throwing. This service is free at autozone.

After that, if you really want to try to remove the code, disconnect the negative terminal of the battery for 5 - 10 minutes, and then reconnect it back and see if the code is gone or not. If it isn't gone, then take the car to the dealership. This should be the cheapest way to deal with this issue.

Thanks, I replaced the battery a few days after the brakes, little bit of bad luck I guess, but the light stayed on. Will Autozone tell me what the code means or just tell me the code

The readout from autozone will say a few thing about what it is but not necessarily in an exact manner.

Which "light" is on?

The brake light or the Service Engine Soon Light?

If it's the brake light, then you probably need to top off the brake fluid or something went amiss and the parking brake sensor is off.

If your SES light is on, then pulling the code will be your best bet. Even if the code was erased during the battery change, if the issue persists, the code will come back.

Ok, thanks. I will try to disconnect the negative and see what happens. If that doesn't work, I will go to autozone and see what they tell me. Thank you for the help/advice.

Yeah, it is not the SES light. I will check the fluids too. Should the code have been cleared if the battery was changed out?

I'm 99% sure that autozone won't be able to help you if your brake light is on.

The OBDII only reads engine fault codes if my info is correct.

Using the battery to clear codes is a poor method. The issue is that you're waiting for the ECM to lose all power and erase it's memory.

I would suggest doing the ECU reset found here:

It's a little more intensive, but the outcome is more precise.

The method of disconnecting the battery works well, but you have to apply the brakes a few times while the battery is disconnected to drain the caps in the ECU.

Much easier than the "official" method.

My advice is to do the battery disconnect first and if that doesn't work, do the key/pedal method.

I agree with Joe but would like to mention about the settings. When the tech stuff get more advanced in your car it is a major pain to lose all the setting you have. Not sure what you lose if you disconect your battery. I know for sure the memo seat settings are gone. If you have to pair the bluetooth and homelink and some other things maybe the disconecting battery should be the second option. Of course it all depends what you lose with the disconected battery.

Yep! I loose my seat memory settings, current trip counter settings--not the main ododmeter data , I think the shift change settings are also lost, etc. I don't have a cellphone and so the bluetooth connectivity in my car is simply idle. When i reconnect the battery terminal, I reset my seat once again with the push of two buttons---takes less than 5 minutes.

Resetting the ECM by either method should clear out the shift points and the "learning" settings.
