One of the nice side effects of global warming is great weather for track events in March. Just spent a few days with the Audi folks at one of their HPDE's on Summit Point's main circuit. Yep, it was a hardship, 70 and sunny both days. Very smooth event. no real mishaps anywhere, track was in great shape, the people were very friendly.
I had one beginner student, a good driver, who drove nice Mercedes C300 (supercharged). I spent part of the time instructing on Summit Point's skid pad, so I got to jump into many other student cars. It was a hoot "drifting" without tire wear. SP has one of the nicer skidpad's on the east coat, so it was great time. Lotsa smiles.
I also got a few hot laps with a good friend in his fairly new Audi R8 V10 6 speed. What a great car. It just does everything so well, I wanted to kick my Z (j/k).
As with any Audi event, there were a wide variety of cars. just one other Nissan besides mine, a GT-R. As far as other japanese cars, there was an stock RX-8, a caged Integra (which is for sale), and many miatas. American cars were represented with a few corvettes, a few mustangs (including a very clean fox body vert), and an old split bumper Camaro Z28!. There were a couple of exotics as well including an Aston Martin DBS, a fairly new SL55 AMG, and a heavily modified R8, Twin turbo and tweaked to about 620hp. plus a few porsches, from race cars to old 911's to 944's.

Here are some pics.....

the split bumper camaro. The car was in really nice shape.

The SL55 AMG. Sweet car. I didn't ride in this one, but I had a student previously in an older one.

a BMW Lemons race car. It only looks bad. it's got a 6 cyl motor and is set up pretty nice for a Lemons car
(For those unaware, LeMons is a race series for $500 cars) get to see some really fun cars. This one has a wall separating the fuel cell from the interior made out of an old street sign.

the DBS - I was kinda hoping to land him as a student but one of the chief instructors took him on. Oh well. sweet car. The chief instructor was grinning widely when he climbed out...

Really clean Fox body '89 mustang vert. Set up beautifully for the track. The owner was nice, and told me he just finished building it. nice sounding car too, plus I liked his license plate

The nice R8 V10 I was in....I want one. That's his Q7 tow vehicle in the background. The Q7 ha a diesel,
and I rode in that too (not on the track) . the Q was beautiful inside, and oh so torquey

Another R8 but this was the twin turbo V10, about 620 horsepower...
Image

nice Porsche racecar with it's hood up...
Image

nice little 318i with a secret. under the hood lurks an Ls7. ridiculously fast car.

Image

what many say is the last best Audi sedan, the 95.5 S6. this one is is caged...
Image

pretty rare in the US. a brand new TT-RS. Nice looking car plus it has a 5cyl motor under the hood.

theRX8 beside my car...

The acura 'teg race car. It's gutted and caged. I didn't get a chance to ride in it, but it sounded pretty good. If anyone is interested, the owner is asking $5K.

the GTR

obligatory shot of my car + flatbed

with an exige in the background. There were a couple of them.

Image

one of the quickest cars on the track, a stealthy GT-3 with a very good driver.

Next up for me is VIR in a few weeks. If anyone's interested in trying VIR, there might be a few student slots left...

Thanks for sharing the pics the Audi looks awesome!

Is there an age requirement in order to participate?

Also is that BMW 318i with the LS naturally aspirated?

I think it's 18 minimum, but I'm not 100% sure.
That 318 is naturally aspirated. It's an evil sounding little car. ;)

That's funny. I'm pretty sure I saw your dust clouds on the bridge straight as you approach turn 10.
I believe my next Summit Point event is in September. Did you check out the new Stasis HQ? pretty snazzy.

For those that never heard of them, Stasis is a big Audi tuner who recently opened an eastern HQ beside the main entrance to Summit Point. They were offering rides in some of their tuned A4's.

Any time folks are on the main course, they wet the dirt track to minimize dust, but after one heat or so the water is gone, so yea, dust galore. Approaching 10 is exactly where you'd see it, as the course is pretty much parallel with the pit straight.

I saw the facility outside the gate and it was a head turner as I dont even recall them building the thing, it was just not there one day and there the next. I did not have time that day to peek around and such as I was running late for registration and then when we got finished I had to jet as I have a lot of work to do to my kart before the SCCA Pro Solo rolls into DC. I will, more than likely, have a snoop around this weekend though.
