so i heard a bit about warming up the engine before driving the Q.

am i right here? my car does take a bit longer to idle at just above 5.

my question is, do you really warm up the car or just drive it? my understanding was to drive the car which warms up the car faster?

what are expert saying in this forum?

The greatest wear occurs when the oil is cold [until it warms to above 150F.

Drive away after cranking is fine as long as you don't rev the engine above 3,000 rpm with cold oil.

The Q also has a temperature sensor in transmission to lockout 4th gear until the ATF warms up.

Abusive operation will just limit the engine life or accelerate the time when the rings and bearings wear allowing the engine to smoke [oil].

The HVAC [on automatic] does not allow the inside fan to run until 90 seconds after a cold crank.

I always allow mine to reach operating temp (3:30 on the temp gauge) before even putting it in gear.

During the winter I'll let my car sit for about 10 minutes before putting it into gear. But my car also has 245k on it.

As I've said no body to blame for engine wear but the owners.

What's an extra gallon of gas per week in the scheme of things for a 5 minute warm up each morning.

so it is normal for q45 to warm up that long 4-5 minutes on idle?

because when i do this, the car runs perfect. it's just that, for aluxury car, it seems unusual to have to do that.

It all depends on the ambient temperature, and the health of the thermostat. It can take as long at 10 minutes to warm up in very cold weather! The thermostat has a rubber seal around the valve that will deteriorate and cause water to flow around it even when it's completely closed. In that case it may never warm up to normal operating temperature.

Another testament of "only the best of everything" will most likely keep this engineering marvel running. It will be interesting to compile what extremes we all go to keep our Q humming - reminds me of the advertisement on TV showing a guy geting up 3 in the morning to take a look at his lexus parked in the garage - such an infatuation is almost required for continuing to drive a first gen Q.

Common sense maintenance and care is one thing, but man, feeding caviar to your dog on each and every meal followed by a belly dance is something above and beyond taking care of the animal.

Reminds me of the Concorde - takes fricking 12 hours of pre flight checks before every 3 hour flight across the atlanic...

Still love my Q, It is like the good old stock market - no point in selling the longs for pennies, hoping one day it may turn up [in this scnerioa , may be this is the last expenditure] - ended up droving down the portoflio from 6 figures to 3 figures and continuing to going down.

May be cutting your losses and moving on is relevant here as well. However; having invested so much into it now, hard to give it away for almost nothing.

Just dropped a new bulb last night, saw the valve covers started to leak again - arghhhhhh

You are not being observantant! 90 secs for the first fan flow extreme low speed then about 240 secs or whenever the coolant exceeds 120F for the fan to start blowing at medium high speed...........no point blowing cool air around plus trying just delays the engine warmup.
