They say history is the best indicator of what is likely in the future. Israel has been in survival mode since 1948. They have been targeted by every country in the region, and have had to be very proactive in responding to threats.

In 1981, Israel bombed the Osirak reactor 18 miles south of Baghdad.

In 2004 Israel sought US made bunker bombs.http://www.commondreams.org/he...0.htm

In 2007 Israel was accused of bombings within Syria. This was supposedly a reactor, but Syria quickly cleaned up the mess before the world could see it.http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10....html

Iran has already expressed a desire to use nuclear weapons on Israel. If a country indicated that they were intending to Nuke the US, do you think we wouldn't respond in a proactive manner.

Israel is in survival mode, and I expect them to do what is necessary to survive, including a surgical attack. They have no choice.

While all true, the article states we are going to do the bombing, not Israel.

That's not going to happen (knock, etc) Israel will deal with the problem before it becomes serious.

If the US doesn't need to. It's a diversion. I do believe that something will be going their way soon enough. My policy would be to send a cruise missile over with a 10 mt head and let if go off on their site. Then send our condolences for the terrible accident they had with their reactor, and blame their technology.

I'm not sure if you said that with tongue firmly in cheek, but I think using a U.S. nuke to destroy an Iranian nuke site is possibly one of the worst things that could be done. The blamestorming session to follow would ENSURE war and guarantee an oil shortage, if not a full-blown embargo.

*Edit* Israel, though now a strong economy in its own right, still relies quite a bit on support from the United States. What hurts them hurts us, so even if they are the target of the retaliation for the military action, we feel it over here.

It was pretty much tongue in cheek as I hope nuclear weapons are never used again.

However, any attack against Iran, whether by the US or not, is going to cause problems with middle eastern oil supply. If (when?) it comes, then it better be a no holds barred, take no prisoners maximum effort. Hit them until they can't get up and there is nothing left to get up to. Doing anything else would lead to problem similar to those we faced in Vietnam and the ones we currently face in Iraq.

I'm for peace and giving peace a chance, where peace is possible. I'm probably even a pacifist but if it comes down to a war, then it should be one designed to be quickly won, not just fought. Targets should be left up to the military commanders. The politicians need to keep out of it. The press needs to keep out of it.

Sorry for not getting the sarcasm. Filter is dirty today.

Agreed regarding your comments about war. We as a nation have spent the last century refining our ability to carry out a surgical military action. Where we get into trouble is when we don't properly plan the "why" and the "what then" questions.

I am not at all easy with our stance on being the big brother who just got out of juvvy and is now back sitting on the merry-go-round at recess just waiting for someone to start crap with lil Izzy. Meanwhile lil Izzy is kicking sand in the face of everyone in a kiffiyeh.
