Hi there...after a long period of time a finally managed to track down two 300ZX and one 200SX s14a. Buying one of them would be a dream come true for me, but since I have no experience with Nissan at all, I would very much appreciate some hints regarding the weaknesses af these cars (what should I look for when buying one?)

These are links to the 300zx I am considering right now - a red convertible '93http://www.cars.sk/xchanger/un...fined

the other one a yellow Targa '91 2+2http://nissan-300-zx.autobazar...49943

the pages are not in english, but at least you can take a look at the pictures if you like

Both are 3.0 V6 N\A manual...I checked out the convertible today, and will take a look at the targa this week. Besides any hints you give I have two (maybe stupid) questions to ask

1st: what should the oil pressure gauge read? I saw a thread where 60psi cold and approx 15psi warm was listed - is that OK?

2nd: the convertible idles at 1000RPM...I drive a 3.0-V6 and it idles at around 600RPM - just wanted to check if that is OK or if there could be some problem with any of the sensors

Thanks in advance for any advice you are willing to give...if you like\can, please also give me an opinion regarding the s14a - I do not have any pictures of it yet

to start with.

Then just keep up with basic maintenance. 1) I always check for a leaky trunk area2) check ECU for codes ( here is a how to - http://www.ttzd.com/tech/diagnostictech.html )3) upon driving car, check brakes for warping (apply brakes and check for shaking in steering wheel)4) check for any irregular smoke out of the exhaust (lite black smoke is normal in moderation)5) check idle for any irregularites (goes up and down irratically)

It is a litte hard to gauge. Personally I would take someone with you with some mechanical knowledge or Z32 knowledge for that matter. Good luck and hope some of this helped.

BTW, check out Twinturbo.net for other helpful hints.

Thanks a lot Milo for the prompt reply - basically I just want to avoid beeing fooled by the current owner of the car. When I bought my Mitsu it had a defect knocksensor to start with (not to mention other things going hand in hand with this issue)...the owner tempered with other sensors so when I found out it was allready late. I don't want to spend twice the money I paid for the car during the first two days - maybe during the first year

The first site seems to have a lot of info. A buddy of my is also looking into purchasing a 300 and I'm going to look at one today for him, just gonna give it the fluid check (no leaks anywhere) and see if there is any smoke and what not.

The hatch leaks on these also? I need to replace the rubber butyl on my 240, I have a little bit of water stain.

Good Luck with your purchase.

Oh yeah, make sure to check the title to make sure there are no liens on it....basically a clean title. No salvage title, if so, get a huge reduction.

Also, I usually check the car seams for welds or breaks in sheet metal. Breaks in sheet metal means a prior repair. Like I said earlier, take someone with you who has car experience.
