every thread i searched through were about ppl wanting to buy a quiet exhaust. i have no problem with buying exhaust tubing and building my own.car currently has 3" megan turbo back exhaust. car is around 300whp so its kinda loud, no carpet either ( soon to be fixed ) the apexi style muffler on the back is so damn loud and sound terrible IMO. it was on the car when i aquired it

now what i want advice about it is i would ideally like to keep the 3" but should i run like 1 resonator and then a 3" inlet and outlet magna flow/ dynamax or something along the lines of a muffler like that ? would that really quiet it down that much ?

id like to not have to buy an all new exhaust from a company.

im open to ALL suggestions. i figured id post this in here bc seems like ppl actually know what there talking about in the technical rooms.

TIA

Any kind of exhaust you build is going to fairly loud. If you want a quiet exhaust, you will have to go back to a stock style muffler. But then you may loose a little top end and some horsepower.

Of course you can eliminate some of that loud noise by doing a few things. You could run two resonators and a muffler. Or you could even try running two mufflers. I have a friend with a 500 hp z31 and he runs two mufflers. Still very loud though as you can imagine.

And some mufflers are louder than others. Cheaper mufflers are going to be louder and sound quality is going to be worse because they use cheaper materials. I know HKS mufflers are one of the more quieter mufflers. Oh and some greddy mufflers are also.

Figured I'd step in here with a little know-how. I don't post on nico much, but I had the same worry - how to keep the car quiet, while performing well.

The quick/easy/not cheap option is to get the exhaust I have - an Apexi WS Noir. It's 3" all the way back with a 4.5" tip, so it still looks the business, but since it's black and <93db, cops don't notice it right away.

Sounds like a stock evo until about 3500rpm (or whenever your turbo spools), then gets a little deeper and about twice as loud at redline. Idle is a perfect purrrr, then gets very quiet at about 1200rpm up until spool.

The cheaper way would be to have a muffler shop weld you up an exhaust - just use a 12" resonator and a decent muffler, or two resonators and a "can-style" muffler, and you'll be plenty quiet while still passing emissions.

By the way, I have a second Apexi WS Noir, brand new, that I got in trade... I'll sell it for $400 (retail is $500+). Shoot me an email at GSXRJJordan at gmail.com.

have you thought about an exhaust valve. you can run your stock resonators and bypass them whenever.

Apexi makes a good one also there are a few on ebay, QTP looks decent.

Do you HAVE to have a super cool lookin jdm tyte exhaust tip? I ask cuz what a few of my friends do, and works amazingly well... is run the stock exhaust but with a "Y" pipe/ cut out. Super quiet no matter what RPMS, but when you wanna let that ***** breathe, lil flick of a switch and the air goes straight out the Y pipe and you have the best exhaust flow. Loud as hell, but if your getting on it, sound is the least of your worries.

Btw mufflers dont have anything to do with emissions, thats catalytic converters your thinking about.

great exhaust for the KA but not for the SR. I bought this exhaust when i had my KA, sound was mildly quiet(with 22" res) but once i put my SR in, the thing is loud at all rpms and the the way the dowpipe(megan) mounts near the transmission the exhaust is sitting on the rear sway bar(a lot of people had this problem even with the ka but not me.) but its def a great exhaust only if it didn't lean on the rear sway bar.

Ive got the Apexi Megaphone. Its quieter than most but still has some noise. Its got a large resonator and huge muffler to it. Piping goes from 3"-3.5". Your gonna find it near impossible to get a quiet exhaust with large 3"+ piping.

The hybrid megaphone used to be most quiet, but I don't know if they make it anymore, so it might be the noir. Only do mandrel bends for turbo if you have no other options. Just get a used jdm jasma exhaust, I think they're levels are around 93 db.

they say you can really hide alot of power. i have full 3 in exhuast and i can coost through town as quiet as everyone else. and when i really put my foot into it is when it opens up.

a muffler just tons the sound down. keeps it from sounding ricy

There's also the apexi exhaust control valve, which can quiet it down alot. You can also install a screamer pipe I think they're called. Also has a valve that you can open up to expel before exhaust system.

I'm running a high flow cat, ebay n1 catback and a silencer. Exhaust is so much quieter now. Sometime I just want to take the silencer out cuz its too quiet while crusing in gear.

Ps. Silencer rattle in extremely cold morning until it warm up

RSR ExMag: Number one for best 'tough' sound, and for being super quiet.

My vote goes with HKS Hi-power...larger piping than almost all the other systems and on my 300hp SR20 it quieted it down VERY nicely...not much louder than stock!
