Hey guys I have a question. I have a SOHC and my clutch fan is alwayes on, Is that how it's sepsto work? Because my car dosent want to heat up at all untill I strat driving it, and now with this really cold weather the car wont heat up at all which sucks cause then I get poor oil circulation.

the same thing happens with my car. i let my car idle for 10 minutes, but the temp gauge won't go up until i start driving.

now is that normal? Cause I could have sworn that even clutch fans dis-engage when it's not needed.

they don't totally disengage, they keep runnin but not as fast.

it might be your thermostat, my friend just replaced his cause it had a broken piece and now his car warms up faster, like normal.

Ok cool, I thought it might have been my thermostat because my car burns fuel a little more then it used to heh. Il let you guys know what it was tom, after I replace the thermo.

s13fx, dumb questions for ya, but what does fuel have to do with the thermostat? and buring more fuel?

if your thermo is messed up like in my case and the car tells the ECU that the car is running cold constantly, it will dump more fuel to warm it up.

3 possible issues, one ruled out already. The other two are:Thermostat stuck openEGR valve stuck closed

Both would cause the same symptoms in winter weather. Both are pretty easy comparatively speaking.

the egr being stuck closed has nothing to do with the car sitting at idle warming up. in fact the egr is designed to work on light cruising and deceleration. that is because the egr dilutes the air/fuel mixture making it run at richer a/f ratio but still consuming the same ammount of fuel.this in turn cools down the combustion chamber reducing nox emissions. it is not used during acceleration or idle because it would cause an extremely poor idle and be very sluggish when pressing the go pedal. you dont notice this power loss during decel or cruising at a constant speed.

And if your thermostat was stuck closed, yes, the coolant in the radiator would never get thru to the block and would remain cool, but the coolant that is in the motor already would boil, since it has nowhere to go to dissapate the heat.

Please check your coolant temp sensor, located on the intake manifold. If it is bad or the connection is corroded, it will not tell the ECU that the car has reached full operating temperature and the ECU would therefore continue to dump fuel like it were cold, causing misfiring, hesitation, black smoke, stalling, lack of power, and all sorts of other goodies.

On the SOHC, the coolant temp sensor is located on the intake manifold right next to the valve cover (front) and directly behind the power steering pump. There are actually 2, the 2 wire sensor is for the ECU (tells it weather the car is cold or warmed up), and the 1 wire sensor is for the gauge in the dash. Inspect the pigtail connector of the 2 wire sensor as well, if it is green with corrosion, you will likely need a new pigtail connector. These are not available seperately from Nissan, you need to find one in a junkyard, but it doesnt have to be from the same sensor or even the same car, most Nissans use this type of connector for just about everything (fuel injector pigtails are identical to this one for instance).

I actually had a thermostat stick open on me, i feel your pain. It puts the ECU into open loop and it WILL destroy your MPG. When you change the thermostat, Id suggest going ahead and removing that clutch fan, its a hp robber and its useless (you can wire the rad fan to always be on, just run into the fuel pump fuse under the hood, theres a guide for it but make sure you put like a 30A in there, the guy that wrote the article forgot to say to add a bigger fuse) Took me and a friend about 10 mins to wire it up. Goodluck.
