reminds me of something i went through similarly with a 1990 CRX SI i wanted when I was about 18. I had a Bill of Sale and a title though so THOUGHT I could register it with no problems, and I also left with the car after giving him cash.
However, when I went to register it, the guy signed the title in the wrong spot (on purpose maybe?) so I couldn't get it switched over, even with the bill of sale.
Luckily, the guy was in the Army, but he had previously moved since he was here for about a month in an apartment before he was moving into his house. Luckily, he was in the Army, and my Grandpa was pretty high-ranking when he retired and he called a few of his friends, got his #, address, etc, and went to his house with one of his superiors and the guy "offered" to buy the car back from me. Shortly afterwards, I searched around for a bit and finally found my 240.
Live and Learn. Patience is key when buying a car you like.
