Are you a KA24E or DE? If you have a DE then you can probably walk on them with the mods you have. The cam alone will put you ahead of them in any race throw in the the intake, exhaust and header and you have have opened up the breathing for your car which is power. Get yourself a Walbro fuel pump and an FMU and you'll open up even more power. Even with just the SOHC KA you should still walk all over them.

but i was also planning on getting a ca18det soon, and i already have the money saved to purchase one

Then by all means get the CA, you'll have a turbo, a ton of cheap aftermarket parts and will smoke them any day of the week, Get some suspension, wheels, and the CA and they'll be licking your nuts before you know it, turbo's have that effect on people.
