smith is spot on.
if you really want a vw (which i don't, anymore, they've completely lost sight of what their cars were supposed to be- which is *light* and economical cars that didn't sacrifice much "economy" to their performance aspect), hold out for the R32. and try not to wince when you hear from every guy with an evo8 who paid less than you did.
the 1.8T really ain't all it's cracked up to be; it flows great stock, but not much room for improvement at all from that cylinder head. get rid of that K03 turbo that comes on it and welcome to lag city... the VR6's are nice and torquey, but mad nose-heavy and difficult to get significant increases from without forced induction.
after 5 vw's, i ended up with a 15-year-old A2-series for a reason... it was the only one anywhere near 2000lbs, and the 16v will make the same hp as a stock vr6 with a few bolt-ons and a rechip. never have i beat so many mustangs with a car that cost me a total of about three grand (that's acquisition, mods, *and* maintenance
