Many of you are probably aware that the VW/Audi coils, especially the "TFSI" coils are pretty popular.
They are cheap, and really powerfull.

I have the R8 coilpacks wich is as i have understood the "motorsport" version.
These are the ones that are used when the TFSI coils give in.

As you can see from the photo, they are pretty tall.
They sit firmly and i could use them without any other support, but i would prefer that.

Wiring is also really simple.

Beware that these are copied alot and you should buy them from a dealer.

I've been wanting to use those on my SR, but haven't got around to buying them... Just be aware that they can be a pain to drive, they can be really picky about trigger current, but otherwise are a nice logic-level coil (built-in ignitor).

They are a perfect match on the SR.

Note that the stock grounding stops at the ignitor chip and you should ground the coils.

I haven't used them yet, just tested to see how they fit.

Easier to find brand new coils, they also may have more spark energy as well.
They also can be had for very cheap, depending on where you get them.

The stock CA coils don't have a lot of spark energy (by today's standards). When you start to run a lot of boost, you can get spark blow-out. You can bandaid this by closing the spark gap, but you always want to run as much gap as possible. Even closing the gap will only get you so far. Then you have to look at coil replacements. You can go bolt-in aftermarket, or you can customize an OEM setup and save some money, and in some cases, get even more spark energy.

Not to thread jack, but when do people usually start seeing spark blow out?

Gt2871 2bar of boost with NGK 6's on e85 required .5mm gap.
Starting to hit their limit when approaching 600hp i belive.

And for reference the SDS ignition setup (GM waste spark coils + SDS ignition driver) is supposes to support 200hp/L without reducing plug gap from the standard 1.1mm. I don't think the stock coils can do that at standard gap.

So in all, if youre doing a T28 basic CA build, stock coils and plug gap are a go?
