I am going to get my car dyno tuned in one of these up coming weeks and I have one last hurdle to get over before I can bring it. I need to make sure my VTC is working and if it isn't, rewire it to make it work. Is there any way to see if this is working without driving the car, I don't want to drive it untuned other than off boost? I'm not even sure of where the solenoid for it is located if someone had a pic that would be great. If its not working does any one have a link or can explain how it works so I can just rewire it all? Thanks for the help! Ill be sure to video the tuning session!

Note: This is a S1 RB25 on a Z32 ECU with Nistune.

The VTC solenoid valve is located immediately behind the rear timing cover on the intake side of the motor. It is about 3 inches long and is a hexagonal cross-sectional shape. There is a two-pin plug sticking out the end of it. You should be able to provide 12V to one pin and ground the other pin and it should switch.

Okay, Thanks! So it sounds like its a simple 2 wire solenoid. Does the pin on the ECU ground or provide 12VDC? From what I read while searching the ECU grounds it but I would like to make sure. Also does the speedometer have to be working correctly for this to work? I read somewhere that it does but from what I have seen it is activated by engine RPM so that doesn't make any sense. Thanks for the help!

I haven't looked at it enough to describe exactly how it works, but it is an rpm-dependent function. The ECU grounds the circuit based on the rpm set point in the ECU in order to either open or close it. I'm not sure if the solenoid is open or closed when energized.
