O.K. here goes I hope I can make this question sound sensible.I am trying to time the #1 intake and exhaust cam on the left bank.I have the crank at tdc, when I try to line up the intake cam with the silver link I get piston interference. Now the first step in this process is to get the intake dowel pointing straight up from the head.Well I can't do that becuase the timing mark on the sprocket, and the dowel relief in the vtc are 180 out.I think this could be my problem because I know the vtc has been apart, and I believe put back together out of time.My question is are the dowel on the cam,and the timing mark on the sprocket both supposed to be pointing upward from the head when timed properly?

"Do not attempt to disassemble VTC assembly since it is difficult to reassemble accurately in the field. If they should be diassembled, VTC assembly must be replaced with a new one."

From the FSM. Are you asking if the dowel and the mark on the same shaft need to be pointing in the same direction? What work have you done since the car last ran?

Yes that is my question.are the dowel on the cam and the timing dot on the sprocket suppose to point in the same direction. The car was running o.k. before but had a rough idle and low power.I did a compression check and all left bank cylinders were reading low equally.I removed the valve cover got the engine to tdc and the left bank cams were installed wrong{they did not line up with the silver links}And because of the orientation of the vtc the dowel must be pointing down ,in order for the timing dot to be pointing up.
