I posted this some time ago about an issue with my 1997 Infiniti QX4. I was driving on the highway when my speedometer went from 65 to 0 while in motion. All my other quages stayed fine and remain fine. In the mean time...I have resorted to just dealing with the SES light on an trying regulate the speed with other vehicles. That was until today. I was pulled over by the lucky police man. I have searched and searched for the actual location of the sensor to start testing and go from there. I have heard it was in the front axle, the transmission housing, rear transaxle, etc, etc, etc. The FSM manual states it is in the transaxle and I do notice a sensor that "looks" like the culprit that has a flange head that uses a 10mm bolt for a hold down in the "U-section" of the exhaust on the passenger side. Is this it? I really do NOT want to invest in a NEW cluster without starting to trace other issues first! Any help is appreciated!!!

No need to get under the vehicle and test at the VSS, just test at the VSS wire. You can test at the White/Blue wire in the main ECM harness. Just strip back a little and test with a multimeter. This will at least tell you if the VSS is sending a signal to the cluster. If there is no signal then you need to check for continuity between the VSS and cluster or replace the VSS.
