I have been wondering if the Stillen 350Z oil pan would bolt onto the Pathfinder engine. Would be nice to hold an extra quart of oil.

Our VQ35DEs have two oil pans, an aluminum (upper) and steel (lower) oil pan. It doesn't look like that pan will simply bolt on. See EM-15 in the FSM (2001.5 FSM, but it should be identical in 2001-2004 R50s).

just wondering... why would it be cool to hold an extra quart of oil ?? it's not a diff, so it won't help for cooling.... just cost more when you do an oil change !... someone can chime in on this ?

Theoretically, a larger sump size can go longer on an oil change for obvious reasons - more oil means more antiwear and detergent additives, etc to go through. Though without used oil analyses, specifically ones that give you the total base number (TBN) and ideally TAN (total acid number), you can't blindly extend the oil change interval excessively. I certainly wouldn't, especially with the VQ35DE's tendency to shear oil quickly.

Great analysis Towncivilian. However extending the oil change intervals is not my main goal here .

There are two issues concerning motor oil degradation:

1. Contamination due to metallic particles:

Holding more oil is helpful in this case as the extra quart (extra 15-20% oil) will help dilute the contamination.

2. Degradation of oil and its additives due to exposure to high temperature

The extra oil will not be helpful in this case as the entire reservoir will be at the same temperature as before for all practical purposes. There will be a small drop in normal operating temperature of the oil but I doubt it will be significant enough to slow degradation of the oil properties and extend the time between oil changes.

The change in acidity of oil is a byproduct of the processes listed above.
