Lately i've been hearing awkward sounds from the engine area when i accelerate lightly. I know for sure it's not anywhere else in the drive train or wheels. I live in NYC so i drive down city blocks and i can hear the slight ticking echoing from the side when i have my windows open. It doesn't happen every time i accelerate but it does happen quite often (if i go from a stop). Happens usually around 1k-2.5k RPM at low throttle.. Is it knocking? What's going on?

Old thread but someone might see it? Anyways the sound you describe is about 95% the timing chain hitting the side of the timing cover, the tensioner on the VQ is oil pressure controlled so check you oil level and see if its good, if its fine then it could be a bad tensioner or another oil pressure related issue. I personally had this happen before and it went away after i replaced a faulty pcv valve.

My 2002 I35 made this noise just before the screw backed out of the butterfly valve on the intake manifold and totaled the engine. I only had 82k miles on the car when this happened.
