In a RWD car, the motor faces the front of the car and runs front to back. This is called "longitudinal".
In a FWD car like the Maxima, the engine sits right above (or slightly behind) the drive wheels, so it has to face sideways. That's what transverse means. Your belts and the front of your engine are next to your right wheel well. Because of this, the exhaust has to be routed around and under the engine, and it makes for some restrictive bends.
The 350Z intake won't work on the Maxima for the same reason: the engines aren't oriented the same way, so things wouldn't match up.
I'm not sure what the difference in throttlebody from Maxima to Z is, sorry.
