there has been a couple, the most popular and probably the best documented woudl be hoke'shttp://www.vq240z.com-a.googlepages.com/homein a Z31 not sure if it's been done but anythign is possible with enought ime tallent and monty, or at least 2 outta 3

but you have to really want to, it's like the rb swap, not the cheapest, or most powerful but it's an option of you got the time tallent and money, for the Z31 and VG30ET has tons of potential and bargain basement pricing, I bought and built mine for around $2khttp://forums.nicoclub.com/zerothread?id=388953

a vq swap is definitely not the cheapest or easiest way to add power to the Z31, the turbo swap is, z31 was $200, running with crank walk, damaged strut housings, and rust holes in the floor, now a $2k car and it'll run 12's

a z32 trans would not need a custom shaft only an 87.5'89 Z31 shaft as they got the same trans with a slightly different bellhousing, the problem is none of them bolt up to the VQ unless you get a Z33 trans, and unless you plan on running a stand alone you'll need the Z33 gas pedal as it's drive by wire and the steering clumn as it's part of the security system which is intigrated to the ecu, converting to a stand alone and a propper throttle activated TB would be easier IMHO, it's all covered in hokes page
