Hey guys, new on here. Visited plenty of times over the years and used the manuals etc so i thought id contribute seeing as vq's are a relatively common swap over there. From NZ btw, the best place outside of japan for awesome cars ;)

Amazing photo quality! Haha thats the only picture I have of its current state.

Stock internals.
Custom everything else.
TO4z copy, with gt35 .82 or .86 (cant remember) turbine housing machined to fit.
z33 gearbox
Link G4 extreme Ecu (Vipec v88 to you guys)

Making 284rwkws or 380whp on 12psi on 98RON, couldnt run more boost as stock coils are s***, buuut just bought some new ones should kick out 350kws easy enough :) Can put up some other pics if anyone wants.

Will post some more later on :-)

Car is 99 last of the s14s
Nzdm 200sx sr20det.
Had it for 5 years like that with cooler, exhaust boost up and suspension. Was around 180rwkw, peaked at a very lean dangerous 204 lol. Lucky I turned boost down.
Always been a street car but now turning more into a track car, plus I've got a nice ute to DD. Lol pickup to you guys.

Decided it wasn't fast enough and I didn't want to RB it so chose the vq instead. Arguably a much better motor ;-)
Took 3years to get it to where it is today!
I did all the work myself bar tuning and alloy welding, I've only got dc tig. I know my way around a vq pretty good you might say!

A few pictures of my build. When I began this build I didn't really know how to weld, pretty handy thing I learned from it all. Oh and I've never swapped a motor. I wanted to build this cheaply and do as much myself as I could. Everything bar alloy welding and tuning I did.

Image
Super shortened shifter linkage, you can't get it shorter without going internal, well that I've seen.

Image
M35 stagea manifold that I'm going to hack up. Plus my driveshaft to chop.

Image
Building new rear x over, I don't like this so much now. Would prefer twins with internal gates.

Image
Engine mounts, they fit into r32 rb20 mounts. The slot locates bolt easier and the bottom plate sits snug in the mount.

Image
Things coming along, plenum cut and had intake switched to left.

Image

My throttle body and custom cable guide. From an sr18 out of a pulsar.

Image
Manifold setup, that was with screamer pipe. Sounded dumb at 7psi.

Image
Located ps res back here, away from heat.

Image

Where shifter sits. I put motor as far back and low as possible in car. Oil pan to x member is 5mm.

Image

Got it running with stock Ecu, over heated due to a hose blowing. Hgasket =toast

Started rebuild, Mmm 4 bolt mains.
Image

Started building wastegate plumback. Don't worry its back purged and perfectly smooth inside, exits late so not to disturb flow. Controls boost perfectly.

Image
Clever wee brace I made using an old banjo bolt and disused water cooling hole.

Image

When apart did the HR cooling mod, so I could run HR head gaskets.

Image
Back together, stated coming up with ideas to incorporate a swirl tank.

Image
Remainder of gate stuff.

Image
Another brace, this time for down pipe. I welded a washer to a threaded rod, then put that through a hose clamp.

Image
Coolant outlet pipe to swirl pot.

Image

Image
Sadly that motor blew a headgasket again, I think block might be out, I had heads machined. Rather than muck about I found a new motor. $400 woop. They usually go for 1200.

I wired in a standalone, got it tuned. Now there's a few more things I need to tidy up but in a going state.

Ahhhh.... This was my dream for so long. But after seeing sooo many more experienced US swappers fail at it, I figured I'd settle for something a little easier/cheaper. BUt if I ever win the lottery... :naughty:

Kudos on all your work and sharing it with NICO. Good luck completing it & getting her running reliably!

It's a lot harder without a wiring diagram, luckily I have this, well its not far off. Getting to run on stock Ecu is no drama. Things are a tight fit! If I change anything it would to run exhaust manifold forward.
I'll put a new video up soon

Well my manifold is a piece of crap limits power to around 300kw @14psi. So left it on 12psi. Managed to get her to a track day! Alot different to drive than Sr, handling wasn't affected too much, few more tweaks moving forward will help. Will build a new manifold to crack 300+ mark soon. Then I can use 4th more instead of 3rd!

Hehe this was a fun day. Pretty high speed track, quite a technical 1st corner. Have a lot to learn. :-)

good to see it at a track day...ive been following your build since the thread you have over on vq30det.c o m

what RPM do you hit full boost and id like to get some more info on wiring in the link ECU (factory sensors?)

Full boost around 4k? Dunno, it's not very laggy under load on the dyno it pulls 5psi at 1500 revs.

Link is simple to wire in, well did have a few issues. Link is good as it has triggers already configured for vq30. Uses all factory sensors +map and air temp

3" exhaust one muffler. Link g4 is an awesome ecu, Link is based in nz and have excellent customer service.

Putting in ecu isn't too tricky, I can help you through any hard bits anyway.

when you were running the factory ECU what did you do with the factory boost control sensor and stuff on the front of the motor?

I don't think you need any of those solenoids. The one leading to the fuel pressure reg looking thing is some balancer thing, don't worry about that just put tthe line off that to the manifold. Think the other thing is carbon canister stuff, not needed.
Boost sensor I hooked up but I didn't run boost contro, hhowever I'd say theboost sensor iisn't required as I'm pretty sure it's only there to help ecu ccontrol boost.
