http://www.sgpracing.com has 11.5:1 compression pistons for the VQ35 engine. Also has cams, retainers, springs, etc Happy Hunting.

I met up with one of the NICO guys at the Phoenix nissan meet. I am a member of Alimas.net from a couple years ago, and just upgraded from Nissan to my G35 Sedan 6MT

themadscientist, fsm for 03 max does not have piston pin height, but it does give the following:"a" dimension(top of piston to solid part of skirt)-41.0mm

Well I bought one VH41 and one VQ30DET piston. The pin heights are different. All other dimensions are the same though so if somebody wanted to have custom rods made to cover the difference Nissan has wicked pistons on the shelf. I was stunned when I pulled them out of the box. Both the VH and VQ have anti-friction coating on the skirts and the VQ30DET has a thermal barrier coating on the crown, WOW!

thanks for the update. this thread has been dead for a while. I am gonna boost to around 6 psi on stock internals (VQ35DE with Vortech (V-2 I think) SC. then when the warranty is gone, we will talk some more about what I need to do with rods. At that time I will drop my compression to 9.6:1 or lower and also do some headwork as needed to maintain a 8.x:1 CR. Then I can talk 10+ psi boost, maybe even 1 Bar.

so TMS, what is the difference in pin height from the crown between the pistons?

The VQ30DE, VQ30DET and VQ35DE piston pin heights are all different. I can get you the pin height on a VQ35 piston if you want it but this data isn't in any of the Nissan ESMs.

Welcome to NICO!

I haven't been on the org for a while, so this is the first time seeing your new PB: 13.19  Congrats, and welcome again.

i was thinking it would be ice to use the vq30det pistons in a vh45, but since those pistons arent stocked here, it would probably make more sense to just have ross make pistons, and some pauter rods.

i wanted to put the rb26 in a J30, but the VH is bigger, cheaper, and a VH41 was optional in other countries, making things easier. [no welding up motor mounts]

i doubt getting the VH45 in and getting a manual to work with the vh would be any harder than the rb into a J.

and the q45 service manual says nothing about pin height.

The VQ35 piston pin height is 30.35mm from the pin center to the top of the piston. The VQ35 pistons are not flat top though.

if i build a vh, i would probably go with aftermarket rods and pistons. besides, i would run the vh stock until i blew it up anyway so its not something i have to think about any time soon.

A stock VH is good for 700+ rwhp.

thats kinda pushing it for 10.2 compression.

i would turbo it so its adjustable. 6 psi would be fine for day to day, and 10 psi or so at short periods. a max of 450 whp would be just fine.

a 700whp wouldnt be a good idea for a street car.

if i could get the z32 5 speed to bolt up with some massaging, and be able to squeeze 400-450 or so wheel horses out of it, i would be more than happy.

the vh just seems like a better route than a rb for such a heavy [3600 lb J30] car.

not to say that it couldnt be boosted more, i would just be comforable having a wide margin of saftey considering the high compression.

People are getting away with 400-500whp on stock VQ30DE bottomends with their 10.0:1 compression. It's all in the tuning. And the early '90s engines are the strongest internally, such as the original SR20DE and your VH45DE. That is back when Nissan would overbuild them.

true, its not THAT high.

i just got my hands on a vq. my girlfriend just got a 95 maxima SE. its got 150k on it, and its running like it just rolled out of the factory.

the only thing that has me thinking about the vh is the auto tranny. it would have a better life in the J than it would in a Q [j's lighter] and a shift kit would firm it up, but once i get a new project J, im gonna put alot of effort into getting the z32 tranny bolted to a VH. hopefully the holes arent too far off, and i dont need an adapter plate made. getting a flywheel that will fit will be a pain also. hopefully somethings close. custom fly's arent cheap.

i would have had this project off the ground by now, but i had a J30 that i was going to work on, and it got stolen. im just keeping my eye out for black J30t's with the grey interior with high mileage.
