Hey guys, as you all prob know I have a 240 and my friend has a 300zx. we found 2 turbos at a junkyard, and i'm not sure if we should get them. one is from a mercedes 300 and one is from a volvo(not sure of model).both are kinda old. so should we buy the turbos. we are only looking to run low boost, 5-7 psi.i'm not sure if we should get these and then build our own turbo kits.we also know a welder who will weld for us for free all we have to do is get the pipes(exhaust). also i'm not too sure about an exhaust manifold.I have a soch should we make one or buy one? and how much are they.all help is appreciated.

Drove a Volvo 850 once while my Q was having some AC work done. It was dull.

seen this a million times. People believe that once they acquire a turbocharger they are most of the way done with turbocharging their car, but its just not so. Engineers have spent thousands of hours developing turbo kits that are on the market, why not take advantage of their research and get one specified for your applications :-D

I do not believe i'm most of the way done turbocharging my car.I just believe a turbo is a major part of a turbo kit.

not everyone one uses a turbo kit. if thats what you think you are wrong. I don't have the money for a turbo kit so I would like to piece one together. of course i would prefer a turbo kit but only if you or someone else will pay for it.:)

Thats all well and good if someone actually makes a kit for your application. In my case none of my cars have kits made for them. On my 240 the only place I knew that had a kit no longer sells them :(

scruffy63,Doing a home made turbo kit isnt that hard from what I have heard. I will most likely be doing it that way myself.

Like the other poster said, find out which turbo it is and mileage on it. Check to see how much play is in the compressor wheel (shaft).

And deffintly go hang out in the engine section for the KA. Specificly the turboed KA section. Some of those guys may not come out and play in the general section like the rest of us goof offs. :D Anyway, they have been there and done that. Should be able to help you out alot.

P.S. I have a few write ups of some of the 240sx.org guys. Some may still wondering around here, concerning what parts they used and what vehicles they robbed them off of.

I actually brought them with me to work, to do a little more research on the subject myself. lol.

Anyway, anyway I can help, let me know. (There are a whole lot more knowledgable people here, but if I can help.............)

LOL, most kits are designed to maximize profit while maintaining some level of performance.

Namely because high end kits wouldn't sell.

ok I also found out what kind of turbo is on the volvo, it is a MIT TD05 I can find both of these turbo's for $75 a piece so which one would perform better. the volvo turbo looked smaller but it was in better condition.(running)

The TD05 is a fairly small turbo and I don't suggest it for a KA-T, in fact both turbos are going to be undersized or incorrectly sized for that application.

Choose the correct turbocharger and you will see much better results from your money. You can even go the route of a cheap 16G.

i'm really not looking for big gains at all though.the most power . I'm looking for is 210. and that is pushing it. so would this turbo not work at all for small gains?

I really want around 170-190. would one of these turbo's give me that kind of power safely. also since they are on the smaller side that means less lag right?

It should support that easily. Unless it's all beat to hell, since your gonna run low boost it should be fine.

Aren't the Mercedes 300 6 cylinders?

(without getting too technical) small turbos= less lag, so it should spool pretty quick and easily support the power level you want
