i know this is a nissan forum, but does anyone have any experience owning volvos? im looking around for a daily (winter) driver, and am looking at volvo wagons. id love to get a 94/95 850 turbo wagon if i can find one for a decent price. (maybe a 740 turbo wagon?) (or a base model 850 w/ 5spd??)what do you think? i think the boxy wagons have a quirky coolness about them, and some are plenty quick. im looking at some other big sedans too (Q!) but some just arent practical enough. my other car is a fairly heavily modified mr2, so the space in a wagon would be nice any areas to watch for in these cars?-Enzo

I drove a 1994 Volvo 850 Turbo (below) around for a week or two while my Q was getting the AC compressor replaced. Quick car, rock solid, great handling, one huge gripe though... everything is so numb.

There was a 1981 Volvo COMPETING in the Falken Drift Showoff around here. I think he might even have won the entire event. That thing was gangster, get an OLD volvo.

850 Turbos pretty quick though.

volvo=teh hotness

my friend's mom had a couple, the red 740 turbo wagon got creamed by a hit and run driver, now they have a white wagon. Not sure of the model, probably a 240, not as cool looking and not turbo.

The older Volvo's are good cars, and can run forever. I got into a long conversation with a Volvo tech at the Philly Auto show. He was telling me the perks that some Volvo owners get for having a car that's over 200k in mi. I say do it!

HeavyHips: That last sedan you posted was the HOTNESS!!!!

I'd go for the RWD, it'll be more fun even with the lesser power. Those wagons are fun too because of the rear-facing seat in the back. Put a blowup doll or something back there and check out people's reactions...funny stuff.

if you're going for a winter car, I'd go with the FWD auto. While RWD is definately more fun, that's what your MR2 is for.

The 850 has got transmission issues with both the auto and 5spd and a string of complicated electrical issues. Also all parts are manufactured by Volvo and priced like gold.

A better buy is the V70 series, apparently Volvo engineers ironed out the quirks. My favourite is the XC.

Of the vintage you're looking for, the 900 series is the most trouble free according to Consumer Reports.

For more info go to brickboard.com or swedespeed.com. They are both Volvo forums.

i dont have the $$ to spring for a v70. im thinking a 740 or 940 would be nice, but i do really want a manual. it may not happen tho. 740 turbo w/ manual = rare. all 940's were auto in usa. that 2.3L turbo four looks fun. muwahaha another prject car in disguise!-Enzo

i used to drive a 94 850 GLT (the only year the GLT was NON TURBO )

it was great, i was very happy w/ the handling, it's not gonna feel like a modded 240, but it's not bad...it was pretty bad in the snow though...mostly cuz the cheapo bald econo-radials that i had but whatever...i say pimp it 850 style. check out IPD-usa.com for some performance stuffs
