All flights in and out of the UK and several other European countries have been suspended as ash from a volcanic eruption in Iceland moves south.

Up to 4,000 flights are being cancelled with airspace closed in Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark among others. The UK's air traffic control service (Nats) said no flights would be allowed in UK airspace until at least 0700 BST on Friday amid fears of engine damage. Safety group Eurocontrol said the problem could persist for 48 hours.

The volcano is still spewing ash and the wind direction is expected to continue bringing clouds into UK and European airspace for some time to come.
The UK's airspace restriction was the worst in living memory, a Nats spokesman said. Some 600,000 people are thought to have been affected.
According to CNN, it's too cold in Iceland to have a volcano.

And the general consensus of feelings towards Iceland. :chuckle:

I am surprised this thread came so late.

I have family in Europe and this has really slowed things down economically. Mail can't move, product, people etc. I don't know any one near Iceland.

One of the women I work with is supposed to be flying to europe this weekend where she's getting married. Horrible timing.

On the subject of volcanos, I've had this awesome shot of lightning in an ash cloud in my desktop background rotation for a long time. It never gets old.

MoD that is phukn crazy.

and i am just blown away by this entire event, its so interesting to me. how the hell are we going to deal with the longevity of this problem? people have to be able to travel... guess the subways/transpo to southern europe is going to be a booming industry for the next few months.

ish is nuts

Captain Slow, I too was surprised at how late this post came, then I saw your name.

MOD, yeah, there's some amazing lightning shots of this volcano, and there's so many different gases that came out in the first 12 hours that some weather photographers even got pictures with 5 different colors of lightning! White/blue, pink, very purple, green and even yellow!

Hey! That's um...well...fair enough. I don't really pay attention to the news very often, and heard about this on the radio this morning.

Here's a cool gif of the path of the ash fallout.
