I have a 2008 M45X, which was the year they changed the GPS to a HD database. The HD system for 2008 and newer model years has both Canada and the US included in the one database. The 2006-2007 model years had a DVD-type data base. Check to see if the DVD you have covers both Canada and the US. I am not sure with NavTEQ for the Infiniti whether you needed two DVDs - one for the US and one for Canada. If so, you have to change them, depending on where you are driving. You can find the DVD unit for your GPS system in the glove compartment.
I may not be right on this, because I am going solely on memory; but check it out, because if I am right it is a simple fix. You can also always order an update from NavTEQ's website to get one that includes Canadian data and with more updated information.
If the DVD in your car does include Canada, then it may a problem of learning to work with or training the VR system. Sometimes it doesn't understand our Canadian accents! There is a section in the owner's manual that deals with this. Alternatively, I have sometimes found it useful to just slow down a little and enunciate each syllable, to be more easily understood. Pronounce the name like some stranger would, rather than the slurred version most locals use (e.g. Toe-ron-toe instead of Trawwna, or On-tare-i-o versus Ontaryo, or E-to-bi-coke, where the k is pronounced, rather than E-to-bi-co). Hope some of this will help solve your problem.
Good luck!
