I want a variable nozzle/vane/geometry turbo so bad I can taste it. These dang things require no waste gate, spool by 2 grand at the LATEST and are impossible to find... Grrr. Oh well I guess a BB T28 will have to do for now.

Check this out. Scroll to the bottom and watch the GIF, it's awesome.

They are a damn neat design, but they've been around since the 80's and the added complexity doomed them from the get-go, as you can see from that page it doesnt work very well after awhile because of exhaust soot building up. The VNT turbos were stock on Dodge's "Turbo IV" motor, the last gen of the same motor found in the Turbo Daytonas and Turbo Omni GLH. The Turbo IV motor was found mostly in Turbo Shadows IIRC. They work alright for a stock motor but I've never seen a larger design of the VNT that made any kind of good power.

That is correct. Dodge used them on alot of their turbo motors. They are VERY popular in europe on turbo disiels due to thier quick spool time, but they are generally VERY small. Garrett is working on a performance VNT setup, but hasn't really released anything yet. Nissan was actually the FIRST company to use a VNT on a production vehicle, but it was on a turbo disel truck. There is a company called aerocharger that was making them for small displacement performance engines (ATV's, motorcycles, ect) but they recently went out of business. They had also made some performace oriented turbo's for vehicles. There was a kit that used them for Miata's, and I saw a Focus with one on it also. The number one statement behind them was the almost instant spool time. Oh well, someday in the future we'll have instant spool and no wastegates...

I actually kind of like my turbo lag, as it lets me fart around town without spooling when I dont want to. I honestly believe the VNT technology would have a better application in really large turbos to get the spool time out of the stratosphere. I don't know about you, but I like my w/g and I like my boost to hit like a dropped anvil around 3.5-4k. :)

Ive got a VNT from an 89 lebaron turbo IV. Got it for $150 from a wrecking yard in texas. There area few places that make performance VNT-25's. Mosstly what they do is stick a big effing turbine on the intake side. I think they stick a "big 28" 500cfm wheel on their.

Basically, anything you can do to the intake side of a T25 or T28, you can do to the VNT-25. its the exhaust side thats one off, obviously.

As far as preventing carbon buildup, I am going to have the exhaust side, inside and out along with all the veins, ceramic coated. We'll se how that holds up.
