ok so i just got home from swapping the guts out of a j30 rear end into a 240sx open diff housing. everything went quite smoothly and the assembly rotates with no noise. to be honest it feels and sounds quite nice. however, there is a slight gap between the stub axles and the housing. now im quite sure that everything is set in place so i dont think i just didnt get them seated. i was just wondering if this is normal?

one half shaft is shorter than the other, did you put them on the correct sides?

yup, they are in the correct sides and both sport the same 1/4in or so gap between the housing and the back of the stub axle flange. just enough to make me wonder.

That's weird. Once you tightened everything down the gap went away right?

What I'm thinking is when you have the car up in the air and disconnect the half shafts, the knuckle and everything drops down further than normal because of the lack of tension from the shaft. Then when you go to bolt it up you need to jack the suspension up to get everything aligned. Do you know what I'm saying? It makes sense to me, but it's hard to transfer my thoughts

i think i understand what your saying, but the stub axles are very tight in the rear end. there isnt (and shouldent be) any deflection in the stub axle. it turns out that i hadent seated the driver side stub axle and remedied that problem with a little "gentle persuasion". the pass side stub axle, it turns out, has a small gap because of the difference in the ring gear thickness between the j30R&P vs the 240sxR&P. this also explains why the j30 stub axles have different PNs than the 240sx vlsd stub axles. that being said the diff is back in and now im on to finishing my project.
